The December NPD is a very special NPD. It's special for two reasons, firstly because this marks the end of the first full calendar year that all three new consoles have been on the market, and secondly because it's the December NPD, which is always the biggest NPD of the year. It's the month where more than ever the numbers really speak for themselves.
Since two consoles have been on the market for a year now and one has been on the market for two, let's take a look back at last generation, and see what sony had to say when a pretty similar situation happened back then. Here's the setting. It's May 2002. The PS2 has been on sale for over 2 years (since March 2000 in japan, and November 2000 in the US). The gamecube and the xbox had both only been on sale for just over six months (gamecube launched September 2001 in japan, November 2001 in the US. the xbox launched in the US in 2001). Here's what Sony had to say about the situation at their 2002 E3 press conference:
THE CONSOLE WAR IS OVER! COMPETITIVE GAP IS WIDENING... MORE LIKE GRAND CANYON THAN SILICON VALLEY. THE BATTLE FOR NUMBER TWO STILL UNDECIDED ONE YEAR LATER BUT IT'S MOOT
This, despite the fact that the PS2 had been on sale for over 2 years while its competitors had been on sale for just over six months. pretty big words there really, but they were right. Such a huge gap even so early in the generation is completely insurmountable, and Microsoft and Nintendo never came close to catching up.
So let's have a look at our situation today. The time periods aren't exactly the same - one console has been on the market for just over 2 years and the other two for just over one, but the numbers tell a similar story. Let's look at the facts:
- Nintendo expects to have shipped 22 million Wiis worldwide by March 31 2008
- As of January 3 2008, Microsoft confirms they currently have 17.7 million 360s worldwide. So let's be conservative and say 20 million shipped by March 31 2008
- Sony insist that they're still on target to ship 11 million PS3s worldwide by March 31 2008... they just have to drum up consumer support by acquiring more developers... but they'll reach 11 million they swear!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Well those numbers aren't exactly the same as the ones in the image, but there's definitely a pretty huge gap between Sony and its competitors just like there was back in 2002. I wonder what sony would have to say if it had to put on a powerpoint presentation today?
December is the month of the year when console sales are generally measured in MILLIONS rather than hundreds of thousands. Last year the numbers played out like this: the PS2 sold 1.4 million units, the 360 1.1 million, the Wii 604K and the PS3 490K. let's take a look at what sony had to say about last years december NPD:
hahahahahah, nice to see that sony thought that they "dominated" the month of December even though their next gen console came dead last (it was the start of the trend)... and the figures boded well for the company in 2007 alright. Let's have a look at this December.Originally Posted by Sony

So can the PS3 outsell anything?
So since we've already established that there's no way the PS3 is going to beat its current gen competitors this year, let's see if it can at least beat LAST GENERATION'S COMPETITORS. Now, to be fair to the PS3 and maybe give it a chance, we are going to compare it to last generations loser, the Gamecube.
So let's get this started. We're going to be looking at how the first year of these two consoles compare in two different categories: sales, and quality of exclusive games.
We have already established that the PS3 has been selling very poorley, surely it hasn't been selling even worse than last generation's loser, the Gamecube? let's look at the numbers.
NPD has been releasing their numbers to the public for over a year now, so we have reliable info on the PS3's American sales since launch. It hasn't always been this way though, years ago they didn't release hardware numbers to the public, only to paying subscribers. Because of this, finding reliable sales data for the gamecube's first year was pretty hard. Until i found this: http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=137448
Using NPD subscriber data which gamepro pays for, we can get an excellent comparison on the Gamecube vs the PS3 not for their entire first years, but for the first ten months of each console's life at least. The numbers tell a startling story. In the first ten months of its life the Gamecube, last generations loser, sold 2,120,000 units in the United States. The PS3 fell well short of this number, selling an absolutely pathetic 1,742,000 units. THAT'S ALMOST 20% LESS THAN THE ****ING GAMECUBE IN THE SAME TIME SPAN. HOLY ****ING ****.
Not only has the PS3 sold less total than the Gamecube did in the first year of its life, but the trend line is basically identical, which means it's not likely to ever catch up! Not to the Wii, not to the 360... TO THE MOTHER****ING GAMECUBE. holy ****. so as far as sales go, the PS3 loses outright to the Gamecube.
QUALITY OF EXCLUSIVE GAMES
Now this was an easier category to compare. All i had to do was go to metacritic, and compare the top exclusives for each system from the first year of their life. Again, the results are startling:
Holy ****, it's an absolute knock-out blow from the Gamecube. The PS3 still hasn't managed a single exclusive game rated over 90 on metacritic, while the gamecube had a staggering FIVE just from the first year of its life. To make matters worse, the Gamecube's top 6 games range from a phenomenal 97 to 89, while the PS3's START at 89 and go all the way down to the 70s.
THE WINNER, IN SALES AND IN QUALITY OF EXCLUSIVE GAMES: THE GAMECUBE!!!!!
hahahahah well you've seen the data with your own two eyes. it's 100% official, the PS3 is much, much worse than last generation's loser, the Gamecube.
