Ok, I'm sorry for creating a new thread and all while it may not be necessary, but I've completely lost track of advances and have to admit I am getting pretty confused.
I have an iPod Touch 16gig 1G (without the speaker, 'old school' looks), currently at firmware 1.1.4 (the one it shipped with). I got it as an early birthday present early april and jailbroke it several days later using iLiberty+. Now, I've kept it in this state ever since, installed a few apps and everything.
However, I feel like I could use an update. My iPod is getting bloated with software, largely due to a conflict between Cydia and Installer.app, which resulted in a lot of memory missing and I have no idea where it went :P can't find anything in /Applications/, nor /bin/ or /usr/bin/. However, I'm drifting off.
I feel like my iPod could use a format, and in doing so, I figured I might as well update to also be able to use the Appstore's applications.
Now, my questions are:
1) How do I update?
Yes, I actually have no clue. What firmware should I update to and how do I get it? Will it cost me anything?
2) What app(s) should I use for jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is my #1 priority, I'd hate to lose my terminal emulator and ColloQ.
3) What has changed?
I see Cydia has taken over the role of Installer, what else has changed? I hear a lot of names and terms I don't recall hearing before.
I run Linux as my primary OS, so I would prefer Linux applications where possible, however I dual boot with Windows XP. So if windows applications are safer or there are no linux apps for jailbreaking, that's no problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
