Simple, they didn't trust the voting capabilities of a citizen, they didn't believe that the average citizen could actually vote right or even make the right decision. And to some extent they're right, just look who's our president now. Bush only got the those votes in 2000 (that he did) because he is a republican , from the south, a countryman, a former presidents son. Not because of his prior experience or intelligence or qualification. There are voters out their that base their vote on things that really aren't consider important and make their decision on some dumb issues.
And frankly I'm sick of this conservative vs. liberal, democrat vs. republican. I just want a president who can do his f'n job, not a war a president, just someone who can do ALL things that the presidency require.
