Has anyone heard of or used Sprialfrog? It's here: http://www.spiralfrog.com It has legal music downloads for free! It is true, believe it or not. Supposedly the ads on the site help pay for the music. Basically they're paying for the music for you. I've downloaded over 500 songs already, and there's still plenty I want. Check it out; it's awesome. All you have to do is register on their site and you can download music. It don't work on iPods, however. You might be asking, "how can this possibly be legal?", well, the songs are encrypted with DRM protection.
I'm not sure exactly how this restricts you, but I'm pretty sure you can't burn the songs to a cd. Also, every 30 days you have to sort-of reactivate your account just to say that you are still using it. This will update the DRM licenses: if you don't do that the songs will stop playing on your portable media player. So every 30 days you will have to put all of the music back onto your player, but it really isn't a big deal for all of the free, legal music you are getting. Simply reactivate on the website (takes about 1 minute) and reload all the songs (that could be a simple copy+paste) onto your player every 30 days.
The downloading process is annoying because you have to hit "download next song" after each song (you can't just build up a list of music you want and have the computer download it for you while you go off and do something else), but in the end it is really worth the time. Also, it takes at least 20+ seconds to download each song. So it can be annoying, but you can't really complain with the kind of service you're getting for free.
I've really enjoyed using SpiralFrog... hopefully this will help some people out there. It's also great for discovering new music. You can preview each song on the website before downloading. Anyway, give it a try! But remember, it doesn't work for iPods! (there is a list of recommended media players on the SpiralFrog homepage, but any product that is advertised as "Plays For Sure" should work.)
Rock on. Legally. :Punk:
