Default President Bush Redefines Abortion

In its final months, the Bush administration is wrapping up a parting gift for the religious right: an official definition of abortion so sweeping it would include the use of birth control pills and other forms of hormonal contraceptives, as well as intrauterine devices.

The proposal came to light because somebody leaked it to the public. It expands upon federal law that prohibits entities that receive federal dollars from discriminating against health care providers - institutions and individuals - who refuse to perform, pay for or make referrals for abortions based on moral objections.

Jesus f***ing christ.

So not only will federal money be restricted to health care providers who allow their employees to DENY CARE to their patients on a whim (err, a 'moral objection', whatever that may be and with whatever justification), but abortion will include ANY type of birth control.

Worst.

President.

Ever.

My friend emailed me that vid this morning with the subject line saying one word, FRIGHTENING.

She pretty much summed it up accurately.

WTF... wow.

I'm still a little confused exactly what this would do, but government (or Church) intervention into regulating people's lives = not good.

EDIT: Wait, the video just says that the regulation would deny federal money to places that force workers to perform an abortion or prescribe birth control pills. While redefining abortion is bad, it doesn't seem like this potential regulation really does anything except protect employees from being forced to do things they don't want to.

According to the video, no. Apparently it just punishes hospitals that force their employees to do things they don't want to. I could be wrong though.

There's a little thing called a 'hippocratic oath' that says they won't let religion or politics get in the way of providing care.

That same Hippocratic oath promises not to give abortive chemicals to anyone, so...
