For the phone line thing thats happening, internet calls. Not a penny goes to bt (assuming your not on bt).
As for sales tax yo could always live in an airport.

Well of course its not the same thing but its the same premise. If they let everyone just pay one fee, then in the later days when they need money to continue running there wont be any. Having a cheap monthly fee gives companies insurance that they can still operate. Premium membership is a service, if they were offering a physical item then a one-time fee would be proper

Absolutely, homebrew is what keeps QJ.net running. By offering free memberships to people who produce homebrew they are doing better for themselves because more people get motivated to create homebrew and then by doing it QJ.net gives away a membership but gains so much more by having additions in their news and development.
