Yes. When an artist tends to get big, the music gets dumbed down. Musicians don't bother putting any time into their work after they start getting big checks, because it's no longer the music that sells the albums, it's the marketing. That's why people so often complain about musicians selling out because they turn to crap. This applies to any genre of music. When you're a struggling musician with absolutely no presence on the scene the only way to gain exposure is to use every ounce of talent and skill you possess to get attention. After you have an installed fanbase, there's no reason to put so much effort into your work, so you can just lay back and watch the cash roll in.

What's wrong with mainstream, midnight? Mainstream became mainstream because people liked it, they liked it because it was good. Doesn't mean you should listen to Mariah Carey(except the vids...), but don't avoid bands like Fall Out Boy just because they made it big.

i never said there was anything wrong with mainstream. people have this idea imbedded in their head that if a band, or rapper, or singer has a hits it big they suck. while this is the case with some people (50 cent) it's not with all of them.
it's as if it offends somebody to know that, that their are other people out their that like the same band as them.

everyone tries to gain some feeling individuality by hating what everyone else likes, and instead they end up being a carbon copy of the same lame ass that came before them.
do you know how many people base their opinions on a musician off of one video and/or song? a lot. do you know how many time i've hear someone say that MTV plays crappy music. i'm surpirsed you can find music between all the reality shows, award shows, and interviews.

this is why i will now and forever listen to what i want. cause at the end of the day when 50 cent is driving home in his maybach, do you think he gives a **** if i hate his music.?

hell, for a mutli-million dollar contract i'll make a rap, emo, country, pop. whatever the **** type of album they want me to make. will that make me a sellout? YES! but all that angry people on the messageboards talking about me and the chrystler ME four-twelve i'm driving will help me sleep at night

Well if you like Evanescence like I do, listen to Within Temptation --- hardly anyone in North America knows about them -- they are in europe or something...anyway their best songs in my opinion are :

Ignore all that and check out The Roots, Tonedeff, PackFM. AVOID MAINSTREAM!!!!

I'm sorry but this is just blatant ignorance, just because plenty of people like a band or artist doesn't mean that they are any less quality or that they have "slod out". You're telling me that if you're favourite artist hit the big time you'd stop likeing their music because other people do? Sure, there is a lot of commercial crap out there, and the music that the original poster mentioned is a bad representation but there are plenty artists that are both talented and mainstream.

Some bands I'd recommend you check out just randomly would be Maximo Park, Blur, Panic! At The Disco, Wolfmother, Field Music, The Futureheads, Muse, Alkaline Trio, Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand and Interpol. There's plenty of mainstream bands in that selection aswell as a few lesser known bands but they're all talented.
