The origin of this gesture is highly speculative, but is quite possibly up to 2500 years old. It is identified as the digitus impudicus ('impudent finger') in Ancient Roman writings and reference is made to using the finger in the Ancient Greek comedy The Clouds by Aristophanes. It was defined there as a gesture intended to insult another. It has been noted that the gesture resembles an erect penis.

O he ment the jester, I though he ment fingers period.
another version of it.
the finger is an old hand gesture, from when kings used to chop off the first two fingers of people suspected of being “revolutionaries” or whatever. (like in the French revolution) this was to prevent them from shooting arrows, because they lost their bow fingers. So when these old royal aswads got really unpopular, people would hold up there two fingers whenever they rode by in carriages as way to say “we can still fight you”.
idk how it turned into a single finger… but british people still sometimes do it with two fingers.
Supposedly it came from when the French were invading England in the Middle ages. During a large battle the French beforehand had threatened to cut off all of the English middle fingers, which were nessessary to shoot the longbow, a very powerful weapon that only England employed at that time in Europe. When the English won the battle they gave the middle finger to the defeated French army with a resonding "Pluck Yew" which was the term used for shooting arrows as the wood they used was from the yew tree.
This I got from a history class in college. Don't know why I still remember it.
And through it all,
How could you cry for me?
'Cause I don't feel bad about it.
So shut your eyes, Kiss me goodbye.
And SLEEP. Just sleep.
The hardest part, is letting go of your dreams.
