Middle of the earth
What would happen if we were able to dig to the core of the earth (just imagine if we had heat suits that protected us from the lava ok ) Would gravity make us stay in the same place forever?

It's a hard question to think about because in the oppisote country to you would be upside down if you could see them from where you are standing

Some theories suggest that the Earth is hollow, but it's been contradicted many times. Check wikipedia for more information.

The earth couldn't where would all of the lava come from?
Anyway my theory is that since gravity pushes down you would be crushed

Dude don't ask me, I always wanted to discuss the hollow earth thing but haven't found a thread :). Check it out here.
Zitat von I-Fzero-I
I always wondered if we dig right down through the earth with all the equipment and everything (which isn't a problem), which way would we come up?

Someone on the inside of a putative hollow Earth would not experience an outward pull and could not stand on the inner surface; rather, the theory of gravity implies that a person on the inside would be nearly weightless. This was first shown by Newton, whose shell theorem mathematically predicts a gravitational force of zero everywhere inside a spherically symmetric hollow shell of matter, regardless of the shell's thickness. A tiny gravitational force would arise from the fact that the Earth does not have a perfectly symmetrical spherical shape, and also from tidal forces due to masses such as the Moon which do not form part of the spherical shell. The centrifugal force from the Earth's rotation would also pull a person outwards, but even at the equator this is only 1/300 of ordinary Earth gravity.
Also, if the Earth were largely hollow but made of the same materials, it would have much less mass than what is actually observed (from, e.g., the strength of gravity at the outer surface).

Dear god, no! It is NOT hollow. There is NO way it is.
I repeat, NOT HOLLOW.

I think the searing heat (6000°C) and massive pressures (3,000,000 times our atmosphere) will be a bit more of a problem before we have to worry about the affect of gravity. Its not something we have to worry about anyway cause we are never even going to break through the crust with any sort of manned craft.

Thats totally irrelevant. We've found a way to be invincible, now we go through the Earth, which way do we come out?

What do you mean?
Lets say you started digging straight down head first you would come out on the opposite side of the earth. As you passed through the core the gravity would change from pulling you towards the centre to trying to drag you back into the centre.

Get out of the thread, it's no stupid religious debate, it's supposed to be scientific smart discussion and you want to ruin it! I do hope your joking...

you couldn't did to the center of the earth, it's mostly molten nicel, you'd have to make a lava-submarine of some sorts to get there...

Listen, that article sounder really pathetic and desperate. I clicked it, and was listening to it, I was half way through it and it warned the viewers, I was getting kinda freaked out so I turned it off. I'm not in the mood for this kinda stuff, maybe later. And I don't really see what this has to do with religion. Religion and Science clash.

If you had the resources to get to the Earth's core in the first place, I think you would would be able to get back to the surface.
Zitat von dante_emo hunter
Also, gravity decreases as you get closer to the center of the Earth...

The core doesn't actually have a magnetic force
As you got closer to the core the gravitational pull would increase but as you entered the core I think it would decrease as the gravitational pull from the material behind you would start to cancel the force from the material in front of you. Although the forces we are talking about would probably just rip you apart anyway.

ok. big hole to the center of the earth. you fall and fall and as you fall your accelartion would decrease do to the fact that there is less mass under you... whatever mass is over your head does not longer act on you. so if u fell like 2000 km or so you would feel as if u were on the moon (not sure if my number is correct). so you would pass the center w. velocity x and then you would start falling in the other direction till you slowed and reveresed again. imagine a sine graph. you would go up and down and up and down except the amplitude is decreaseing. eventually you would hit zero or a number that is infinatly small. so u would just be suspended there surounded by a ball of lava with little way to get out...

The centre of the earth is by far the densest part of the earth so thats where most of our gravitational force comes from. The material we pass by before we get to the core would exert a comparatively insignificant force on us.
Why would whatever mass is over your head not act on you any more once you passed it?

I never looked that up, but I always assumed that since on the surface, we are affected by all the mass beneath us, that the core would be weak in gravity since it would be pulling from all sides...
