Yeah i thought it would cause a big huge explosion lol But it looks really cool. And cost alot of dam money for an expierment.

It would never cause any explosion. If it went wrong the photons would burst through the tunnel and bury straight into rock. They'd burn themselves up before they come anywhere near the surface of the earth.

The real worry from nay sayers was that the collisions would cause a micro black holes to form and grow exponentially to destroy the Earth. The formation of micro black holes is very unlikely, but the formation of stable black holes is even less likely. Theres nothing to worry about really.

Protons, photons, same thing. It's been 5 years since I did my A-Level physics

Steven Hawkings said that even if black holes were produced they would "evaporate" within seconds.

I wounder,if really able produce stable black holes, what would do with them..

Nothing to worry about, the black holes will be cleared up by a special radiation(forgot what it was called).

If they succeed with the actual thing in october, this could be the next stage in producing energy and fuel, no pollution, more energy and the only thing that could go wrong (1/50000000 chance) is a black hole being created, and doing something.. I dunno, but great news

Should be an interesting few months. They're intending to actual get onto proton collisions before they switch it off for the winter, if that all goes well then there'll be full power collisions early next year.

    You mean Berkenstein-Hawking radiation?

When this escapes, it looses energy ( mass ), hence e=mc2.

So yeah, they will be most likely to shrink in less than a second, considering how small they will be.

What the hell is with the black hole crap? If a black hole was made, it would be so unbelievably unstable and small that it would simply disintegrate... resulting in absolutely nothing happening.

Yes, but the atoms haven't collided yet. It will take several months for the machine to reach full power, and then they'll smash the atoms.

Also backing yourself up against this "black hole will disintegrate" stuff isn't necessarily something I'm keen on doing. People seem to believe this simply because 'Stephen Hawkings' said so. Its never been observed...ever. So there's really no definite way of knowing for sure that the black holes will infact disappear. You know Stephen Hawkings is human too, he could make mistakes.

But there is a definite way of knowing that the only size black holes generated by the LHC could be would be subatomic, and that they MIGHT have a mass-energy of a few grams by the time the earth burns up in the expanding, dying sun.

And I quote, from the first page.

Zitat Zitat von Archaemic Beitrag anzeigen
I don't think that it's going to create a black hole that will kill us all. Even if it does create miniature black holes, they will evaporate quickly (Hawking radiation has to come from SOMEWHERE, right? ...assuming Hawking radiation actually exists, at least) and not get much time to suck stuff up (nor much stuff to suck up. Their event horizons are so small that primarily what they're warping is vacuum). I don't know if it'll find any God Particles, but it'll sure provide a lot of data to be crunched.

Here, I'll do some math for you. Let's assume that it's smashing two electrons together with a total energy of 14 TeV (about what it can do). This means the resulting black hole would have a mass of 14 TeV/c^2 = 2.4962*10^-23 kg. That's really tiny. So let's calculate its Schwarzschild radius: 3.694376*10^-50 m. That is so tiny...you can't even conceive how tiny that is. One electron is on the order of 10^-18 m. So really, nothing CAN'T escape from that radius.
    (emphasis added)

Don't worry about the black holes. They won't do anything.
