I'm sure just turning a machine on caused earthquakes all over the world. Just from turning it on. Really, it's true. I swear. They didn't even have to do the actual experiment and collide them which was what the fear was of, all they had to do was turn it on and cause chaos, I swear it's true.

@El Diablo LHC was turn on after the earth quakes...
Now the "collide" im not sure about what well happen.
im just wondering how much power it well take for the collide?
Well the power is some area around word need to be turn off?
This experiment is using loads of power.

Well, hypothetically how long would it take for a substantial black hole to consume the earth? Would we be informed of our remaining time?

I'd hope that the people that created the internet would have the foresight to make sure they have enough power at their disposal.

If they haven't done that then I don't think they're qualified to be doing what they're doing.

Yes, but the atoms haven't collided yet. It will take several months for the machine to reach full power, and then they'll smash the atoms.

Also backing yourself up against this "black hole will disintegrate" stuff isn't necessarily something I'm keen on doing. People seem to believe this simply because 'Stephen Hawkings' said so. Its never been observed...ever. So there's really no definite way of knowing for sure that the black holes will infact disappear. You know Stephen Hawkings is human too, he could make mistakes.

Well if it made a black hole that would be considered a threat, how much time would we have left. Do you think we would even be informed?

Remember it's just a hypothetical question.

That's when they're planning the first collisions. They don't intend to perform full power collisions until next year after the winter break.

    Test timeline

    September 2008
The first beam was circulated through the collider on the morning of 10 September 2008.[17] CERN successfully fired the protons around the tunnel in stages, three kilometres at a time. The particles were fired in a clockwise direction into the accelerator and successfully steered around it at 10:28 am local time.[18] The LHC successfully completed its first major test: after a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen showing the protons traveled the full length of the collider. It took less than one hour to guide the stream of particles around its inaugural circuit.[19] CERN next successfully sent a beam of protons in a counterclockwise direction at 14:59.

    October 2008
The first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008

They're not in a hurry to do the full power collisions because they don't know for absolute certain what will happen. So they're planning a collision this year before they shut it down for the winter, this gives the machine time to cool down and time for them to analyse the data they collect.

And why do you think they'll need repairs?

That's exactly why I'm saying there's a difference between the collisions they're doing next month and the collisions they'll be working up to next year.

Everything that happens in the LHC is high energy.
