Force field tech may make touchable holograms possible
A device that uses ultrasound was used to create invisible 3D forcefields suspended in midair. It won't help you with an oncoming missile, but there are other possibilities. And as Gizmodo said, when I mean possibilities, "I really mean 'virtual sex.'"
This technology is tactile, meaning you can touch it, and it gives the appropriate feedback to the computer. Which means that if you can apply light technology to it, you can actually create touchable holograms. Holograms that can touch you back. Ok, that sounds dirty, but I couldn't get how the developer of the tech described it out of my mind:
The tech is even said to let you feel the nature of the material. It's the holodeck just waiting to happen. This tactile display enables tactile feedback superimposed over 3D graphics projected in free space, which provides more intuitive handling of 3D "touchable" graphics. For example, users could touch Princess Leia projected in the air.

I upped your post count so that posting links should work moving forward for you. Also, for the youtube tags, you only need to paste in the part after the equal sign for it to work.
On topic - This is very cool.

Woah, this sounds like something out of a Star Wars film. I can't wait untill we start to see these in our living rooms!

Um... if it's real, why can't they just drop the paper onto the field and let it sit there?
Seems like paper on a string to me... but if it was at SIGGRAPH, who knows.[I fail @ life]

freeplay, i'd say the reason is probably because the "force field" is easily breakable, for example that chick was bearly touching the thing, which means, it's either not real, or an increadibly fragile "force field", hopefully though it is real

the "force field" was made using airborne ultrasound tactile display, which, from what i understand, uses sound to create pressure. from how it looks in the video though, it seems it's not strong enough to keep solid objects afloat in midair, but it's enough to give tactile feedback to the computer.
maybe someday they'll be able to make the field strong enough to feel solid. but that might become too strong that it becomes dangerous for humans?

at least it's a good start in the field of "force fields", however i'm not an expert so maybe it's not a good start, but a far behind one, but idk

I think technology like this has existed for a while actually. Wiki "Acoustic levitation".
I'm hoping that Emotiv Systems get involved in this though. They're the group that are working on some video gaming peripheral that apparently:
What I'd be interested in seeing THAT software applied to objects in the real world by combining this research with Emotiv's.

How about this?
As long as it's a fairly sturdy pressure, couldn't you, hypothetically, stick a few under a car, which then causes it to hover? As long as the field is the right shape, as well as pretty flat, it could eventually work.
We could definitely be seeing what was fiction, and presumed impossible, but now possible.[QUOTE=Archaemic]

I gotta agree with Freeplay. The ultrasound image was enough to BEND the paper, but not hold it? They could of at least shown what would happen if they let it go.
