Scientists recently discovered a new species of earthworm in disused mining sites in England and Wales. These "superworms" eat toxic waste, and s*** out a type of metal that plants can suck up easily. Sounds like the nature's equivalent of two girls one cup.

I gross myself out sometimes.

The earthworms eat heavy metals like lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper. They don't make the metals less toxic, they just make it easier for plants to absorb. The long term goal now is to breed these superworms, give them large S logos and red capes, and release them at polluted sites to speed up soil rehabilitation.

The fun part is when this system becomes incredibly efficient, scientists could use the plants to harvest metals. Imagine - a metal farm. Literally growing metal.

Maybe once day we will see a dump truck full of worms being unloaded onto a chemical infested area. Then after their all done, a huge vacuum sucks up all back up in the truck. Cleaning the streets with style.
