The End of the Universe
Since I'm feeling rather self-destructive today, what better subject to share than the end of the Universe as we know it?
Because man obviously hasn't lived long enough yet to get to the end of the universe, we can only theorize. You'd think people would just be content knowing we wont be there when the universe ends, but no, humans have to figure out *how* it will end. Ah, human curiousity.
Anyway. Since we are only able to speculate how the universe will end, there are many different theories depending on what string of physics you favor. Only of them is true, but we'll never know which one of them is. It's like god. We'll only know if s/he exists when we die, and if we have a soul. There are theories that range from dark energy ripping the universe apart into elementary particles, to the universe splitting into new worlds. Here are the ones I like best.
The most popular theory of the end of the universe, or my favorite at least, is the Big Freeze and/or Heat Death. The Big Freeze happens if the universe does not stop expanding, in which case it becomes too cold to sustain life. Heat Death, on the other hand, is the end result of entropy. Energy becomes so evenly distributed in the universe that life isn't possible. Life can only appear in an environment that allows transfer of energy (digestion is the most basic example, thought processing is another), so in a universe where energy doesn't move, life isn't possible.
My next favorite is called the Big Crunch. This is like the Big Bang, except in reverse. In the Big Bang, a singularity explodes, and the universe is born. Eventually, the universe collapses under its own gravity, very much like a black hole, and everything is singularity again. Then that explodes and the whole thing repeats all over again. It's like a giant heartbeat. The pulsing heartbeat of the universe, as it was described in Sophie's World.
Poetry in science. I love it. And just to share, because I love xkcd:

I don't mean to make this thread a debate about religion and so forth, but it's quite simple. God, the creator of the universe, will decide when the universe will eventually come to an end. You can talk and argue with my way of thinking, but I know that this is true, and will soon become a reality. All this other junk about the Big Bang theory and any other theory of that nature, is completely fictional. But just ask yourself this. How could an explosion, or collision if you will, create such a beautiful universe? How can such a destructive event be the start of all life? The Big Bang could not have created all the planets, and the life of all human beings. There must have been a creator, God, with a plan for everyone. The brain, stomach, liver, kidney. Don't you think it is all incredible? Someone must have designed it to all work together, and make life among us. Now others may think that we adapted to the environment and we evolved. Wrong. If so, then why aren't we still evolving today? The bottom line here is that God will be the one to end the universe, and "he's got the whole world in his hands".

If you actually understood the Big Bang Theory, and how everything came to be, then I'm sure your opinion would be much more different than it is right now. I'm not even going to bother diving into this and explaining it all to you, so my only advice for you is to do some research. I mean, doesn't high school teach you all about this anyways?
While doing your research try to push religion to the side for a moment. Provide yourself with a foundation of knowledge concerning the basics of evolution and the countless evidence/facts behind it.

@ This thread: I think we'll have bigger problems to worry about before the end of the universe approaches ;)

it's way off topic from the original subject, but it's an interesting one nonetheless. don't know if moderators will allow continuing this line of conversation, but they can always delete or move it.
i don't mind talking about religion versus science as long as both parties respect the viewpoints of each other - if there is a point of disagreement that has no resolution, then we leave it as it is, an agreement to disagree on something. having said that, i will share my views on the matter, given that we don't let this conversation implode into an argument where someone has to be right. because i don't care who's right, really.
yes, the universe is a beatiful place, and the world as we know it, with all of its living beings, is perfect in its own right, flaws and all. for me, this is because the universe had billions upon billions of years to coallesce into what it is now, and life on earth had millions of years to evolve as well. not that that negates the existence of god. who knows whether evolution was god's plan was to create life?
i'm not going to argue what evolution and the big bang is about, but i will argue their validity. i can't turn a blind eye to the evidence that evolution and physics presents. it makes sense for me.
there is a story i usually hear about a teacher who challenges his students to prove that god exists. one lone student stands up against him. the teacher asks the student whether you can taste, feel, see, hear, or touch god, arguing that none of our senses can prove his existence. the student fires back "well, does your brain exist? can you taste, feel, see, hear, or touch your brain? no? well then your brain doesn't exist."
the story ends there, as if the student has proven the case of god. i find this foolish. there is evidence that the teacher's brain exists. he thinks, he talks, he walks, and it is proven by every human dissection that any person who can reason, talk, and walk, has a brain. can i believe that the teacher is somehow doing all this without a brain? maybe, but i normally wouldn't choose to do that.
my point is that there is solid evidence that supports the big bang and evolution, based on established laws of math and physics. i cannot comprehend all of these theories, but that doesn't make them any less compelling, and so that's what i choose to believe. does that negate god? absolutely not. the two can co-exist. even the pope says there's no contradiction between the bible's doctrines and evolution.

Very interesting points of views you have. I am not here to argue or anything, for I have no energy or care to do so. But I respect your thinking, don't get me wrong. When you told the story about the teacher and the student, I can see where both of them are coming from. The teacher obviously has the type of "Seeing is believing" mentality. As for the student, he thinks that the teacher is hypocritical, and fires back the same argument. But I'd rather not go on and get carried away, because I would like to hear some other members' thoughts on this if they decide to speak up. :)

Every time I read one of your science articles, I always feel dumb.
It is very interesting to read nonetheless.
Also, that comic was funny as hell lol

Bah......... There is another universe.... Maybe there is another Earth that we can mess ity up as we did to this one, The Big Bang Theory could be true but i don't believe it because it is so simple.

The one thing I hate is all the 2012 crap, the world will not end on that date, its impossible.
The Earth is 6 billion years old, its gonna take a little more then a group of people from 4000 years ago to convince me.
But onto the Earth, does anyone else think its pretty crazy that its 6 billion years old? Like thats a helluva long time. To think what we have done to it in only the past 100 years. And to also think what other life forms may have walked on here.
To talk about life on other planets or other universes like ours. They definitely exist, theyre just so far away, there light has not reached us yet so we cannot see them. Thats all I have to say, kthxbai

I don't support the 2012 crap either, that's just absurd.

I don't know if you guys have heard yet, that the Andromeda Galaxy is heading towards our own Galaxy and will eventually hit us in 3 billion years. Hope you enjoy it.

Here is a link where you could see the prediction on how the Milky Way will end.
How the milky way will end
If any one here knows in how to put youtube videos here please let me know. Thank you.
