that's a HUUUUUGE TURTLE!!!
oh man! that's HUUUUUUUUGEEE!!!
it's crazeee!!!

that's wawa bear the oober enormous, gigantic, humongous black sea turtle, who traveled all the way from Canada to French Guiana as a participant in scientists' quest to track the sea turtles' migration data.
she's been in on the Great Turtle Race program for a whopping 15 years (talk about dedication), but ended up only 5th in the race. The winner was a turtle sponsored by Pearl Jam -- yes, they have rockstars as sponsors.
other sponsors were REM and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
That's a very cool turtle right there.
and again, it's farkin' HUGE!!!

Not all that hard to imagine. Leatherback turtles are known to grow really huge. They're the fourth biggest reptiloid amphibians in nature - the first three spots are owned by crocs, which, understandably, are huge.

Complete and utter idiot, I wouldn't sit within 30 feet of one, let alone put my damn hand in its mouth!
On a side note, they're so awesome they have a kind of 'move' named for them... "Death-Roll"!
-

LOL yeah that's what i said. the "death roll". it's a trademark attack among crocs. an evolutionary technique they've managed to pass down for survival.
when i first got to see the video, i thought it was all part of the parlor trick - the croc chomping down and all. kinda like those clown gags when they ram their heads into an elephant's arse. (they actually just bow down their heads and bump their napes to the elephant's beeehind... but that's besides the point). however, when i saw that the croc did the death roll on the trainer guy, i was like "oh shiiii--- it's friccin real!" and then of course the blood... and then walking off with a mangled forearm... etc.
i mean, i should have already thought it was some serious $h!t when the croc chomped down, but i guess i was still being skeptic of it.
OH! trivia.
speaking of crocodile bite-down chomping g-force power.... (one which i sort of touched on in this other science thread...) despite enough muscles to bite down with as much force as 2,500 lbs per square inch (imagine around 156 bowling balls stacked one on top of another, focused on one square inch of your arm - yeah that heavy!), crocs have very delicate muscles when it comes to the opening of their mouths.
which is why if you ever find yourself pitted against a croc*, one weapon you could use is a rubber band. if you manage to catch the crocodile with its mouth closed, you can snap the rubber band around its snout and it won't be able to open it! hahahaha! cool huh?
(sorry for hi-jacking your thread, mabie! lol. you know how it is when i geek out on stuff...
)
*caveat - not sure if it's the same with crocodiles and alligators tho. hehehe!"Think of the solution, not the problem."

i was expecting to see the trainer put his head in the croc's mouth. now that would have been certain death even without the roll. o_O

I'd hate to think what 156 balls on my head would feel like!

hun, i think "headache" is a severe understatement. lol.
-=Double Post Merge =-
you mean like this?

according to wikipedia:
In southern Africa they are known by a host of names including red romans, haarskeerders and baarskeerders, the latter two relating to the belief they use their formidable jaws to clip hair from humans and animals to line their subterranean nests.
wow, theses guys have got some voodoo shiz going on there!
here's more:
As indicated by the origin of their name, Solifugae are mostly nocturnal, and seek shade during the day. It was this behaviour which led coalition soldiers in the 2003 invasion of Iraq to think these arachnids were attacking them. In reality, they were merely moving toward the newly available shade provided by the soldiers' presence. The absence of shade sends them away.
see, they're just misunderstood.
haha. still, that doesn't mean i'd want one to be my friend. o_OGeändert von Mabie (05-12-2009 um 10:49 PM Uhr) Grund: Automerged Doublepost

There are grosses pics related to camel spiders online. Most of them showing wounds of people who've supposedly been bitten by camel spiders. If you want, just google image search for camel spider. The thumbnail hits on the first page should give you an idea. And NO, I didn't dare click on any of the search hits.
These, gross as they are, are actually just hoaxes.

According to the soldiers relatives; the bite must have happened while he was sleeping. He wasn't even aware that he had been bitten. He woke up to a large lump on his arm. Then while out on maneuvers, the cyst-like area ruptured open. He was then sent on to the MASH Unit in Kuwait. They dug everything out (puss & ??) then packed it with gauze, put him on a strong round of antibiotics with instructions to re-pack the site several times a day. The area was too large for them to stitch shut. They claimed that it would cause an air pocket under the skin. So it had to be allowed to heal from the inside - out! It seems to have healed pretty well, leaving a small scar about the size of a penny.
Pretty nice. :P
