Sure....we'll land a man on Mars when Hawking stands up under his own power.
Seriously, it's all political maneuvering right now and not focusing one BIT on our need to explore beyond our own planet.
And that's just f***ing sad.Geändert von Abe_Froeman-X (06-22-2006 um 07:12 AM Uhr)

Its not the earth thats F***ed its the people that are F***ed. Earth has been around for billions of years through a lot of crap, volcanos, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Global warming and diseases will not mess up the earth, it will mess up the people. Other species will still go on ofcourse, there are species that live in the harshest conditions. Harsh for us, not for the species. Who knows maybe another species will take are place, that are smarter and capable of more things, like operating out of the full brain.

Seriously guys, cruise down to mexico, get a cheap subspace drive and a gravity inverter and rig it into the trunk of your car. It's amazing how cheap you can get space travel devices in a country with no space program.
In fact, I should probably be more worried about it than I am.

It'd be a dismal existence. Who would want to live in such a hostile environment? The lack of full Earth gravity alone would wreck your body.
-
07-14-2006, 06:49 AM #46
Lack of Holy land on the moon makes it an extremly appealing choice right now. Muslims won't go there because they can't pray towards Mecca in space. Christians and Jews also have their respective holy sites on earth, the moon will be free from religious bull****.
There's probably no oil on the moon anyway, less risk of war between neighbouring nations right?
Lack of gravity would make people feel lighter, you can go on the Moon diet! Go to the moon and you loose about 5/6ths of your weight instantly!

I'm pretty sure that I read an article somewhere that said that the human body loses a serious amount of muscle mass in low gravity environments, including heart mass.
It's be a death sentence to live on the moon over time.

I think you would loose muscle mass to some extent but not heart mass.
Zitat von Abe_Froeman
To bulk up, most people do weights, but on the moon, where the gravity is 1/6th of the earth, everything will feel 6 times lighter. Less effort is required to do things, so you can't stress yourself the way you normally stress your muscles.
A counter to that is to just lift weights that are 6 times heavier, unless everyone starts weight lifting on the moon, there is going to be muscle wastage.
You heart would probably work at the same rate. On the one hand you won't be stressing yourself as much, since exercise would be easier, but then again there is no gravity to help move blood around, so your heart will have to compensate for that.
Space medicine is actually quite an interesting topic. I have a chance to study it next year but I think I'll opt for something a bit more useful.

You're aware that the sun has a surface tempature of only around 10,000 degrees and is around 90 million miles away right? Are you also aware in the space around earth it's 100+ below zero? Distance is null. Mars is extremely hot in the day, 200 degrees, and extremely cold in the day, -200 degress... But yet is really far away. It depends on atmosphere, we could terraform Uranus if we wanted to, but it would take a really long time.

YOU STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MY ANUS.
Zitat von Prodigy
Ok, I havent been serious about this until now, but in all seriousness, I agree with Steve. Obviously not for the reasons he wants to go to space... to be honest I didnt even read the initial article. Silly physics genius.
I just think that its a severe dissapointment that we have a space program and we pretty much dont care about any space except for the space around our own planet and sending robots to mars.
Here's the thing. We have eight other planets within a nearby distance of our own. Any other planets are an outlandishly far distance away. So, while we're figuring out how to cheat the laws of physics and fly away to some other star system, we should really finish moving into our own.

I used to think in a similar fashion Jay C. I wanted to see more space exploration and another manned moon mission, but the more I watch the news each day, that money is better off spent here.
Reliance on fossil fuels, medical and scientific research, the list goes on. I feel confident in saying that if the money for one year that NASA receives were spent on cancer research, it would most likely be cured.
-
07-15-2006, 10:33 PM #57
What's the use of curing cancer by say 2010 if we're going to be killed off by an asteroid NASA can't protect us from in the same year?

Because that's a scenario that's as ridiculous as the idea of assuming there is even the slightest probabilty that it can actually happen.
Zitat von Prodigy
Do you honestly think that if there was an asteroid hurling towards the planet and desctructive enough to destroy it that the doors to NASA will be padlocked shut and some state trooper (picture Sergeant Slaughter) standing in front of it with his arms crossed? "Sorry boys, funding went elsewhere this year."
-
07-15-2006, 10:41 PM #59
Man, you know very little. Right now the Bush Administration is taking money from NASA, budget cuts all over. It's a republican war on science, and NASA is the head target. Yeah, let's spend 2 billion bucks stopping homosexuals like myself from marrying instead of using that money to defend our ****ing planet.

And for the record, I've been pushed so far to the left by this administration that I can't even see the line anymore.
