Default [GUIDE] Entry Level Homebrew for the New and out of Touch PSPers

Entry Level Homebrew
for the New and out of Touch
PSPers
by Larry
Intro
Lots of noobs to the PSP CFW industry are asking for all of the cool homebrew and/or themes, and the oldies are asking for the new stuff as they emerge from their 2, 3, 4 year hiatus, or whatever it may be. So I decided to make a small pathetic attempt at a guide for the latest must-have*entry level homebrew. This guide is basic, and advance users need not to read, as I guarantee that you will know and probable have all the homebrew here. I will not include direct download links, as they tend to die. I have tested and used all the homebrew/themes listed, and I probably still have 90% of it.

EDIT: I missed a major category: Themes.

HOW TO USE:
This is an example of how I will show you the homebrew apps.

Homebrew Name:
Site: Where the homepage of the homebrew is. Some may not be the actual homepage, due to it being non-existent. PM me if links go down.
Latest Version: Self-explanatory.
Description: Again, self explanatory.
My Rating: My opinion to how good it is. Out of five stars.
Made by Whomever.
*Must-have is an opinion. May not be "must-have". Not affilitrated or endorsed by Subway.

Custom Homebrew Itself
There are 2 main types of homebrew out there: M33, and HEN. There is also CFE, but it runs under M33. M33 is Pandora powered, where it is used on PSP’s that can be Pandoraed. HEN, aka ChickHEN, is used on PSP’s that cannot be Pandoraed, such as the TA-088 v3 motherboard, some 200x series PSP and all 300x series PSP. More motherboard info here: PSP MOTHERBOARDS. Keep in mind that the site may be out of date, somewhat to the point of HEN coming out. HEN info: ChickHEN R2 Info

The latest M33 is 5.00 m33-6, and the latest HEN is 5.50, R2. A good guide fully describing the installation is here: Elite999’s The Ultimate CFW Installation Guide.

If you want CFE, go here: CFEv3.1

Homebrew: Games
There are many good PSP games out there. In fact, that’s generally the reason you want homebrew. Homebrew games galore, game emulators, and game stuff I can’t say on forums. (HINT:ISO,PS1) So, I am going to spew out some of the greatest PSP games made, as well as my favorites. I will include emulators and all the other stuff in here, because they all are technically “games” NOT APHABETICAL!

Daedalus X64:
Site: DaedalusX64.com • Index page
Latest version: R429 Alpha-Yeah, that’s alotta revisions. It’s been around.
Description: The best N64 emulator that even walked the PSP ground. It has no limits to the games it can play other than this exception: Most do not work to the extent they were designed for. Some do get close, and even rarer some are nearly 100% playable. But it is still fun to mess around with old favorites, like Mario 64, or Goldeneye 007. Both are playable, but Goldeneye is right slow. Mario, you can beat the game, but it has issues.
My Rating: 4 ½ stars. Will get 10 when it gets out of Alpha, and gets more playable. Remember, I rate out of 5! That should tell you something.
Made by the Daedalus Team.

PSP Billiards:
Site: PSP Billiards
Latest Version: 0.2
Description: 8-Ball for the PSP. 9-Ball too. Has mp3 background playback, and a very good computer opponent. Has Ad-Hoc MP support.
My Rating: 5 stars. It simply is a good homebrew game.
Made by slicer4ever.

Jelly Car:
Site: QJ Forums
Latest Version: 1.1
Description: Jelly Car. PSP. Nuff said.
My Rating: 4 stars. It doesn’t have my favorite levels from the IPod.
Made by Drakon.

SNES9x (TYL):
Site: YoyoFR's psp stuff - SnesPSP_TYL
Latest Version: 0.4.2 me (it hasn’t gone anywhere, but it doesn’t have to)
Description: A SNES emulator for the PSP. It has save states, lots of emulation options, AWESOME game compatibility; I have never met a game that DID NOT WORK. It has cheats, it has everything you need.
My Rating: Guess. If it happened to be 5, you win a cookie.
Made by YoyoFR.

DOOM:
Site: QJ Downloads
Latest Version: 1.4 (Chilly Willy’s version)
Description: Remember Doom? Well this is Doom for the PSP. That is all that really needs to be said, but. It has Network Support (Infrastructure), Cheats, all sorts of setting to tinker with your Doom, CPU customization, and much more.
My Rating: 4 1/2. It has glitches, but very minor ones.
Multiple Authors, this version by Chilly Willy.

gpSP mod:
Site: QJ Downloads
Latest Version: multiple versions
Description: A GBA emulator. Has great compatibility and runablity. Never crashed on me. Has great save state and cheat systems.
*There are too many versions, so I have all the versions available in the site link. (ON QJ)
**Requires a file unhostable on QJ: The GBA bios. Google it.

My Rating: 5 stars. Excellent overall.
Made by ******** and others.

Homebrew:Tools
These tools are the apps that get your PSP by by offering you abilities that OFW doesn't have. Be warned, some can harm your PSP.

Hellcats Recovery Flasher
:

Site: QJ Downloads
Latest Version: 1.60
Description: A must have for any PSP user with a FLASHABLE PSP! If you do not know what that means DO NOT TRY IT! Make sure your PSP is either a PSP-100x or a PSP-200x with a hackable motherboard. All PSP-100x's are flashable, but not all 200x or 300x PSPs. Do not even install this on a 3000 series. It is useless on it. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR ARE DOING WHEN YOU INITIATE THIS HOMEBREW. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DO A RETARDED THING AND **** UP YOUR PSP!!!!!

Anyway, it is a must have for any flashable PSP. It allows you to reflash your PSP if it bricks(AGAIN, KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!), to update/downgrade your CFW, or OFW. It is simply a must have especially if you brick your PSP when you are away from a PC.
My Rating: 5 stars. A AWESOME homebrew!
Made By HellCat
*Remember, I, HellCat, or anybody else but yourself is responsible if your damage your PSP with this program. Know this. And accept it.

FuSa Gamepad
Site:PSP Downloads | FuSa GamePad v0.2
Current Version: 0.2
Description: Turns your PSP into a fully fledged GamePad for your computer. Allows you to use every single button. Turns off the LCD for power savings. I got 8 hours out of it on a full battery playing GTA SA. Worked good, except for the fact the PSP does not have the same amount of buttons as a PS2/3 controller. MAC/PC compatible.
My Rating: 4 stars. Good program, but lack of button combos leaves something to desire.
Made by Andy_maN.

Adhoc File Transfer:

Site:
QJ FRONTPAGE
Latest Version: 0.7
Description: Allows you to tranfer files between 2 PSP's wirelessly. Even allows you to transfer files via Game Sharing, provided one PSP has this neat utility! Can transfer large files (aka Movie's) in around *20 minutes.
My Rating: 5 stars. A truly useful homebrew. Dont leave home without it.
Made by Minerva
*Movie file was 628 megabytes in size.

Made by JJS

Ultimate PSPTube
Site: QJ Downloads
Latest Version: 2.0 Yes, something beyond 1.0
Description: Allows you to watch Youtube, Metacafe, and 24 other sites on your PSP via Infrastructure connections. Works best when 50% plus. Allows you to save and view files in .flv.
My Rating: Awesome! 5 out of 5. Works Great!

LightMP3 for PSP
Site:Sakya's Homepage
Latest Version: 2.0.0 RC3
Description:An multi-function Mp3/Wma player for the PSP which is considerably better than the built in version.

Made by Sakya

Homebrew Addons: Plugins
Plugins add very basic functions to your PSP, that run continuously in the background. My rating will be omitted here because I feel it is unnecessary. Plugins are generally very small in size, from 5kbs to 50kbs.

Ultimate VSH Menu
Site: QJ Forums
Latest Version:

Themes
Themes are, well, themes for the PSP. They allow you to change the look of the PSP XMB, or even replace it. I cannot believe I forgot this category. Again, I will exclude my reviews because you do really need to decide for yourself what you like. The links should have screen shots on them.

CXMB

Description: This is THE app to have is you want basic XMB themes on your PSP, with a wealth of themes HERE. There are more themes everywhere on the web, including here on QJ Forums.
