Greetings all, I am glad that I found this forum!
I am a relative noob. I have an NDS and have purchased an R4. I have a SanDisk 4 GB microsd. I have the SD formatted in a FAT32, as this is what R4 recommends for the 4GB card. I have dragged and dropped the required programs from their disk to the flash card and plugged everything in together. Upon booting the NDS, some times I get the 'Loading...' screen for indefinate amounts of time, others I get TF/SD error. I have yet to load any games, because I cant even get it to recognise the R4. On Windows vista (here is the noob question) How does one get the programs to the root directory? There is no file that pops up as .dir or anything. Help for the special needs guy??? Thanks in advance -K |

Thanks for the input guys. I did format the 4 GB as a FAT 32. I downloaded the new R4 1.08firmware without any problems. On a newly formatted 4 GB card, followed the instructions as per usual. (the instructions say to drag and drop the the root directory, however there is no files listed after the format) Everything transferred to the the card without problems, so I figure that it knows where everything is... Transfer to the NDS and got the same 'Loading...' screen for indefinate amounts of time. It acts like it cant see the files that I have loaded. Is it possible that I have to make a new root directory for the NDS to 'see' what is on the card? If thats the case, how do I do that? (sorry if thats an obvious question)
Thanks in advance, -K |

Make a folder in the micro sd? (like, folder: DS Games>ds games go there), is that what you are asking?
What files did you place in there? |

Sorry if this is 'Captian Obvious'.... When I format the micro sd, then look under windows explorer for contents of that card, it states 'no files'. The instructions of the R4 states to drag and drop the english firmware to the 'root directory'. I am an old 'DOS' guy. I dont see a folder J:/file.dir or any file for that matter to drag and drop too. I am making the assumption that where I drop the files to is indeed the root directory, even though there is not a defined file listed. I was thinking that I was doing something fundamentaly basic that was wrong, and placing the files in an area that the NDS cant see them on its start up sequence. (hence the loading screen for ever). Any ideas?
Thanks again, -K |

4GB SDHC doesn't work with the R4, as previously stated in this thread.
The highest you can go is 2GB with a normal Micro SD card. Sorry. Ps. The latest R4DS kernel is 1.13 (no SDHC support though) http://www.r4ds.com/soft/19-en.htm |

Just bought a red/black NDSL and an original game cartridge in Hkg last week. Tried the game and it works fine (english version). I then bought an R4 and an 8GB sandisk microSD from the same shop (the shopowner tells me R4 can support up to 8GB!). Went back home to Manila this week. Loaded kernel v1.18 as well as downloaded some ROMS. Inserted the microSD to the R4 and into my NDSL. Turned it on and disappointed that it just showed 'LOADING...' for the longest time. In short, it never got to display a menu. The 8GB is FAT32. Could this be the case as ised8em above? I haven't tried a 2gb microSD card yet though. Why oh why can't R4 support higher than 2GB?

The older R4s only support up to 4GB. There's a new R4 that I've only seen online that takes 8GB, 16GB, and so on... and if you're sold a "new" one in a shop in Hong Kong, you're probably not only getting an older one, but a cheap knockoff as well...

So that shopkeeper guy in a reputable electronics shop in Hkg duped me into getting the 8GB microSD! Just bought a 2gb Transcend microSD here, re-did everything, and voila! my R4 works perfectly! I am now playing ROMs, MP3s and viewing JPEGs on my unit (no movies yet). By the way, is there a way for the R4 to automatically resize JPEGs to fit the small DS Lite screen? Manually pressing the Y button to reduce the size is very cumbersome, and slowwwwwww.
