HELLO! I hope you like the mod. I hope this makes it to the front page:)
After knowing and seeing that the DS Lite has the same exact glossy feature as the PSP had I knew that either:
A)Keep it in mint condition
B)Find a suitable case
So after owning the DS for a good day or 2 I can sat in my room and had it slip off my lap and onto the carpet. Luckily the keyword there was carpet because if not then it would have been bad. Yet I thought "What if that happened somewhere else? Yea Ive got a warranty but then it would cause more annoyance than just getting a case." Finding a nice case was the problem. Then for a local forum I took some comparison pictures for the psp and lite. While doing that I saw that they were around the same size. So I had my trusty PGP for my psp and saw that you can fit the DS Lite inside but when you close it there is a problem.
ONTO THE PICTURES AND TUTORIAL!
This is what you see when you try and close it without modification:
Inside the red squares is where the corners of the PGP make contact with the Lite and push it down. Unless you want some nice slices taken out of your new DS then I suggest reading on.
What I used:
Its honestly as easy as that. Cut those corners down and it theoretically would work. Yet there are still some minor problems.
1)Having it in the way the PSP does hinders MY performance of being able to jam the buttons down. Since the PSP has those bumps on the rear so does the PGP. If you use the direction pad the Lite tends to fall into those indents and raises up leading to messing gameplay. Yet this is more of a personal issue. Some of you might have different stances of playing.
This picture is of how the PSP and DS will sit on the BOTTOM part. Bottom meaning-i know one is upside down. (of course psp on the right ds on the left)
For the DS Lite to get a nice Flat surface you have to reverse the way you put a console into the PGP.
To avoid the PGP crushing your dear Lite these spots are where I cut and eventually (after the project was finished) smoothed out.
Slap your DS back in and you have a nice gripping case! Well....another problem. Once you put the ds in the case of course it will close up nicly like so:
But once you close or even lay the Lite inside the case the shoulder buttons get caught and stuck on the rubber of the PGP case when they are pressed. To solve this you must cut some of the rubber off around the shoulder buttons.
I cut mine in a curve which wasn't the best way to do it. If I had another chance I would have done it in a L shape around the buttons but doing what I didn't doesnt bother anything or ruin any part of this project.
After cutting the buttons now work 100% to their capabilities without problems.
The final product:
As you can see you can still flip the DS Lites screen all the way back.
-Make supports on each side
-Create a custom plexi side so it is a full rectangle instead of the outline of a psp
-Buy another PGP and make both the top and bottom the same (no bottom bumps)
-A lot more...
I hope this helps someone who wants a durable case instead of just a sock you put your DS into. After being in China with my psp the PGP has taken a lot of beatings and survived what I put it through. I've grown to love the PGP and how its made so I decided to do the same for my DS. I also had in mind that this would help the cramps go away when playing metroid and other games because it would have a curvature that you can't get by holding the Lite by itself.
Money spend on the project:
$7.99 + tax
I found a used PGP at EB games for that exact price. No matter what I was willing to pay $20 for a new one but I was amazed I found a used one and for that much.
Ill update this whenever I do more. I hope you enjoyed it.
