While I have both a PSP and DS, and I love working with homebrew on my PSP, I must say the idea of running this stuff on DS seems even more appealing. I have a lot of questions, would love to get some feedback on some things.
First, I saw the link posted yesterday on ds to this site: http://www.g6flash.com/main.htm
Is this the type of hardware I would need to run homebrew/software? If so, is this the hardware to go with, or is there one solution out there widely regarded as superior?
While I understand the limitations of emulators, what about GBA ROMS? Does the system have to actually emulate those, or does it play them as if straight from a genuine cartridge? On a side note of that, is there a solution to playing GBA games on the DS full screen?
I would like some more information on converting movie files. Anything would be nice. What kind of software, and what formats does it support for converting (xvid, divx etc?), and how does it look when playing? Any chance I can get some idea of file size ratio to film length? For example I know on the PSP where I typically convert video to the lowest settings available on PSP Video or 3GP, a standard 30 minute TV show, which without commericals comes to around 22 minutes or so, converts to an average of around 40MB. This is important to me largely because it would determine strongly the size of the media I get.
In addition to the hardware, do I need to further modify my DS? I saw this link on ds today:
If this is necessary, what do I have to give up? (I have a modded X-Box, and now can not use xbox live for example). Will I still be able to play any DS game, as well as any DS game online?
Can you load and play roms from DS (I see them around) without any loss in quality? What's the current state of emulators? If I can play an NES game, how do they look/sound/play?
If anyone can shed some light on these, or just point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. I think at the end of the day, I would rather be stuck somewhere with my DS and it's homebrew. I still love my GBA games, and my PSP has nothing to offer me in terms of games as of yet. Not to mention battery life on the DS, and the fact that my heart doesent skip a beat every time a peice of lint falls on the screen(s).
