Easy review on Nintendo browser for NDS, NDSL.
Today, the DS Browser has been released here in JPN. Due to myself at work, this brief report is based on my playtime during lunch, so eventully it will be a bit short and no pictures.
First of all, there are 2 packages of this browser software, one for DS, and one for DSL. Haven't bought both of them, but since there are 2 packages, I don't think there are compatibility between the 2. Also, I only brought my normal bought on launch date DS (not flashed) here, will need to try it out with my Flashme7 DS when I reach back home.
The package comes with 1GBA cartridge and 1DS cartridge, and you'll need to stick in both to use. (in other words, bye-bye to my M3s, but hey, need to try on MK2/3 later on) Looking at my friends NDSL, the GBA cartridge sticks out from the DSL a bit. just like the ordinary way, so, the GBA cartrige size is about the same size as of the games.
When first launched, keyboard, timezone and launch limitation password will be asked to set. Concerning the Wireless Settings, if the user has used the Nintendo WiFi Connection before, there are no need to do any settings. If it was his/her first time, we need set the SSID and WEP key manually.
The Key Configuration is as following:
A: Enter, B: Cansel, X: Screen Change, Y: Letter, Cursole change.
As of other functions depending how you use, there are also some presets, for example, B has the function of canseling the reading, and such.
The screen can be moved around using the cross key or the touch pen/screen. The cross key can move from Links to Links, but by the touch pen, we can drag around the screen. By pressing the L/R trigger, then can scroll the window up/down.
Due to the DS having 2 screens, there are several modes of showing the browser. As of default, it uses the verticle mode. Other selection seems to be, 2 screen mode. (Top view will be scaled up version, while below screen will be full page, or shirnked to show the full page, and by pressing the touch, it will show it large in the top screen, hope you get the idea), if you want to click a link you need to bring the window to the below screen (the touch screen to click, so, for links on the top screen, you'll need to switch it to the buttom, or scroll to the buttom.)
To input words, use the touch screen as like a PDA, just write into it, or as setted as the first launch, use the software keyboard. It seems as it is using a similar word recognition engine with brain age, so, most Japanese Characters were easily recognized to it. Also, can use alphabets and numbers.
Using the internet. As of default, it has 2 ways of search, one is search within the page, and the other will be using a search engine. The default settings was on Yahoo! JPN, while, I've managed it to be Google (JPN). So, customizing it to you own usage is possible. Also, having the bookmarks of your own is also possible.
Some inputs so far:
SSL paged Logging In was possible. Can go into Auctions and bet.
Flash Pages doesn't seem to be supported. (It doesn't read it)
Pop Ups seems to be not supported.
Also, all Cookie seems to be erased once the DS turns off.
Security wise, this is good, but you'll need to hassle everytime to log in into ID/Password necessary pages.
Internet Speed. Haven't gone to calculation pages, but it seems to be around 100-150kbps. Abit faster than my cellular phone, but a bit slower than the PSP. (This includes rendering the page as well).
Sorry for a brief post, will try later on again when I reach back home.
