well i do currently have 35 ships out doing stuff. i mostly concentrate on upgrading my mines and solar plant. expensive work... but it makes everything else come easier. i have:

Metal Mine (level 16)
Crystal Mine (level 12)
Deuterium Synthesizer (level 10)

so far.
i figure if i have a lot of ships and little resources at home, defense wouldnt really be an issue since i'm out alot. gotta reduce my depedency on solar satelites though. lol

Try making some fusion reactors. They make a lot of energy and will hardly effect your duet supplies since your mine is so high.
