I think we need to have a benchmark test with our new PCs,but I wont get the rest of my parts for probably close to 2 weeks.
It would be interesting to see if 2 3870's could get close to the benchmarks he will probably get(price wise thats $535 vs $272),we even have the same processor (and case for that matter). Im still not sure weather I'm getting 1 or 2 video cards yet tho. I just wish ATI(or the other companies that makethe cards) would give some freaking release dates on the new video cards already, but ill prolly end up getting 1 or 2 3870's unless they release some dates before Wednesday when I get paid and order the parts
Just post your 3d mark scores in my thread and we'll see
im really interested to see this all put together.
I have to overclock mine first.
I only got 12259
Awesome... Took me about 5 hours to assemble, and it posted on the first try. Absolutely amazing.
Just installing all of my programs and drivers right now.
5 hours?!?! jebus that is a long time lol what took so long? i dont remember exactly how long it to me to assemble mine but i think it was 30 min to an hour tops.
Well, the fact that I had never down it before, so I was both reading a guide on the internet (basically to see what order I should build the PC in) and, as strange as this is, I consulted the user manuals a lot. Which, is something I don't think I've ever done. But you've got to remember, this is my first build, so I was being very cautious.Originally Posted by afiser
Anyway, last night I was messing around with the BIOS, try to overclock my PC, and it just wouldn't turn on after I screwed with it one of the times. It SCARED THE EVERLIVING SH*T OUT OF ME. I thought I had set the voltages on one of the components to high, but I wasn't sure. It would turn on, but I wouldn't get a beep or anything. It would just hang on POST code 54, which according to my manual meant nothing. So I got on my iPhone, and frantically googled what the hell Post code 54, and just as I was about to give I, by chance I stumbled upon somebody asking, about something completely unrelated to my situation, weather he had "taken out the motherboard battery". At this point, I damn near wanted to cry, thinking I had fried something on my less than 24 hour old computer, so I said, "I hope this works", so I pulled it out, and left it out over night. Poped it in, and it freaking worked.
If you ever wanted to see a grown man cry, you would have gotten close to seeing it last night if you were around me. I was straight scared man, and it was only made worse by the fact that I had to try to goto sleep while thinking about it, and waking up and immediately thinking about it.
There's no way I'm overclocking this thing. Not after that sh*t.
There's guides on how to overclock. Do you have a better cooler than the stock cooler?Originally Posted by Joey
which happens to be the one Hardrive suggested ;)Originally Posted by Joey
I might end up getting that too,I might run into some Budget issues tho and might decide to try the stock cooler for a while
I've been through worse while trying to oc...but nothing that couldn't be easily fixed. When it happened to me i was like WTF!!! But once you get the hang of it it gets a little better and you won't be as scared...Originally Posted by Joey

I saw a post or 2 saying you can get the E8400 to 3.6 ghz just by changing the FSB to 400 mhz, without tampering with the voltage.
I also saw another post or 2 saying you shouldnt get the E8400 above 1.4 volts as well.
Heres a link that will probably refer to if I try to get my E8400 to 4ghz
That would've been my suggestion if you simply asked here on the forums :P Usually motherboard problems can be fixed by popping out the battery (while the power is unplug of course) and waiting a few minutes and then plugging it back in. GLad it's up and working for you. I could overclock my machine as it has freaking cold air coming out of the front by the CPU..but I don't want to take a chance with something that is working perfectly fineOriginally Posted by Joey

Well, here's the problem. On my Mobo (XFX 780i), I can't find the FSB speed. I mean, I see things that say FSB, but they're all around 200mhz, and that just doesn't seem like that's what I'm looking for.
If I could find a tutorial with an E8400 on my Mobo, then I think I could get it. But at the current moment, I'm just lost.

Well I knew about the battery, I just didn't think about it until I read that post...Originally Posted by FrozenIpaq

yea, well the only time i have done it was my first time back in october.Originally Posted by Joey

Oh, all I've been doing over the past 3 months is reading up on PC parts, and how to clock them and stuff...Originally Posted by afiser
The problem is that on the internet, all you get is a lot of (usually conflicting) opinions, and you don't know which you should believe...
Anyway, I have my CPU running at 3.5ghz right now. The only problem, is that when I raise my RAM (currently at 500mhz, acording to CPUZ), the timings automatically drop, no matter what I set them as. Right now, they're 5-7-7-19. If I reset the speed to, I think it's 400mhz, the timings go back to stock at 5-5-5-15...
Also, CPUZ says my RAM is PC26400, when Newegg said it is PC28000... So, I don't know, I'm quite confused.
stupid question, but arent lower timings better?
They are, which is the problem... I can either have my RAM run at 800Mhz with 5-5-5-15 timings, or 1000Mhz, with 5-7-7-19 timings...Originally Posted by teeth_03
Basically, I can't get my Ram to run as it was advertised to run. Which sucks, but hey, that's what I get for being cheap.
Did you pick up any games yet for that hog?
Sometimes faster memory with higher timings is better than slower with lower timings...sometimes it isn't. Just try out different settings but don't overkill it. What I usually do is set my memory to "linked" and "synced" so that it is in a 1:1 ratio with my cpu's fsb, and I can push the timings to 4-4-4-12 2T...all ram is different however, so find some settings that are right for you.Originally Posted by Joey

I have Crysis and the Orange Box... And I'm probably gonna get Mass Effect tonight.Originally Posted by Abe_Froeman

I"ve tried to run it 1:1, but it never lets me... So I have to run it unlinked, and set the Ram to 1000Mhz (at 5-7-7-19), which it does, but like I said, it's supposed to do 1000Mhz at 5-5-5-15, and it's not, which honestly bothers me more than getting my CPU up to 3.5Ghz.Originally Posted by Frenchb0ygenius
Seriously, if the RAM can't do it, then Newegg shouldn't advertise that it does... Or, at least G.Skill shoudn't.
Nice games, wish I had my desktop when I was looking to buy Orange Box (I got it on 360 because my PC at the time couldn't handle it). Also, I'm glad I waited for the PC version of Mass Effect - works great on my system. I prefer desktop games to console games for just being easier to access and load up - console games require swapping disks and just seem take longer to load up from cold bootOriginally Posted by Joey
I just found out my RAM is running at 400mhz instead of the advertised 800mhz...a bit disappointing but I'm in no rush to change that
Do you know who I am?
Have you tried upping the voltage? The voltage should be around 2.1-2.2v.Originally Posted by Joey
Actually, I put 50+ Hours into ME on 360, and I beat both Ep.1 and 2 (and Portal) on the 360 version, so I'm buying that for the second time. The Orange Box is just so good (HL2 is a top 5 for me... Can't wait for Ep. 3), and I wanted to play some Mods on it, and ME is easily one of my top 5 games, so even though I've already beaten it, I want to own it, since I only rented it the first time.Originally Posted by FrozenIpaq

Also, look for and disable all of these options in your bios:
HT Spread Spectrum
Limit CPUID MaxVal
CPU Thermal Control
C1E Enhanced Halt State
Execute Disable Bit
And try raising the voltage of the CPU FSB and your SPP just a little.
