PC Hardware Updates
I was wondering since I just got given a fairly old computer if I would be able to update some of the hardware in it? if I can how difficult would it be?
Here is a list of some of the hardware and stats.
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz (18 x 133)
Motherboard Name Intel Silver Reef D845PESV (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 DIMM, Audio)
System Memory 512 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (64 MB)
Disk Drive ST340014A (40 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100)
Version Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor
External Clock 133 MHz
Maximum Clock 3060 MHz
Current Clock 2400 MHz
Also is there anything I can do to speed the computer up to it's maximum speed.
I can't edit my messages
hmm a few upgrades you may want:
- RAM, maybe up it to 1GB or 2GB ... 512MB just doesnt cut it :(
- Processor, If that motherboard supports it maybe go to Core 2 Processors (ill have a look and see if it does)
- and if it doesnt support the new CPU get a new mobo
And this RAM

Get a different one.
P.S Get a bigger hard drive, if your getting a gaming computer 40gb will just not cut it get at least 100gb.
yeah tooplex it wasnt till after i posted that MOBO i realised how bad it was :S
eh but you get the idea a mobo in that price range
Bump I need a new graphics card and possibly an upgrade for my RAM that will be compatible with my motherboard, please help.
My advice is to not bother updating that PC. You'd be better off making a new one rather than pumping money into old technology.
DDR RAM is expensive due to it being out of date and no longer mass produced.
AGP graphics cards are also out of date but I believe they are still mass produced so shouldn't be too hard to find.
With all that said if you still want to go ahead and upgrade this relic then the best I can find is these (sorry for ebay links, it's the easiest way to search for me (at least I managed to get AU prices for you), if you want to look elsewhere just use the same model names):
2 x 1GB DDR PC2700 - AU$43.99 + Shipping
HiS ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP - AU$225 + Shipping
Those two points I made have basically been proven wrong by the powers of ebay. I didn't know that ATI were still making AGP cards as the 3850 is a very decent card and DDR RAM is a hell of a lot cheaper in the US than it is in the UK.
DDR is pretty plentiful here, just not so varied in selection. You could only get the PC400 versions (DDR 3200). You ask for a specific, and you get the headshake.
That 2 x 1 GB deal is almost sweet.
I spend money on old technology. Well, sometimes - when I do HAVE money...
Yeah PC3200 is the best DDR you can get but seeing as his PC atm has PC2100 I'm willing to bet it doesn't support the 400MHz RAM (it could still use it but there's no point).
