Tomb Raider Legend Review. (SPOILERS)
Okay so crystal dynamics didn't make us sign any NDA's so im free to go ahead and make a public review about this game even though it's not out for another 2 weeks, it's absolutely full of spoilers so if you don't want the game ruined, stop reading right now.
The game is not 9gb as many people were suspecting it to be, its actually around 5gb on disk., the control methods on keyboard are usable but i would not suggest doing so, i found setting up an X360 pad to use in it, much nicer in the longrun.
The game has quite alot to offer, after each level is completed you unlock various things depending on how well you did and how many secrets were found, ranging from item models to char bios, concept art etc, each time a level is completed you unlock that level to be played in time trial mode, each time a new outfit is used during the game, if you complete the level you unlock the usage of that item in "Lara's mansion", (the way to her room incidentally is up the stairs, left, then right to the end, the big silver door on the right, in there you go into the walk in wardrobe to change outfits), you may want to go and grab the grappling hook from the safe behind your geeky pal in the comp lab first, in your bedroom you'll find two posts with a shield on the wall in the middle, pull both posts to get your guns.
The personal light is on the desk in the study (door before the one to laras room)..
Anyway, i tried many times on the first and second level to obtain all the secrets, but havent yet managed it, needless to say Gold secrets are INSANELY hidden away.
Diff outfits, 3 levels of difficulty (before completing the game), and 3 levels of "secret", bronze, silver and gold, will keep even the most avid tomb raider fanatic busy for weeks.
TRL uses vehicles like never before in the previous games, you first encounter the joys of vehicular motion when you are chasing mercenaries to save your friend (level 2), after a fierce gun battle you hop on a rather blatently advertised ducati and speed off, the "riding" level then ensues, shooting other riders and avoiding obstacles is satisfyingly fun!.
Vehicles arent always used for mini levels however, such as the red ducati on the roof of the building in the tokyo level which you use to jump over to the yakuza building, or the forklift truck with you use for ALOT of things on the cornwall level (hint hint, drive it down the stairs, you'll live longer and get further).
My most favourite moment on vehicles in the game is probably the long snow chase on bikes where at the end you jump over the train twice before jumping on the rear and riding over the cabs, it was really fun :)
At various points in the game you'll find yourself no longer in completely control of your character, as she leaps and bounds to avoid death you must push the keys that appear on te screen to stay alive, originally when seeing initial info on this game i assumed it would be a dumb idea, however it is'nt overused and where it is used, it's used to great effect, with mistakes at each point giving a different result.
THANKYOU crystal dynamics!, at last a large, large portion of the game is spent in and around tombs, solving countless increasingly difficult puzzels and avoiding death, thanks to the adjusted shooting system even the gun battles are no longer boring, though there are SOME levels in citys, such as the research facility, and tokyo, theyre often made up for by fun happenings, such as throwing exposive barrels around with a huge assed tessler coil.
The puzzels are well thought out, and sometimes massive, you really have to use your head in later levels just to figure things out.
The learning curve on the boss battles is great, you start with a simple shoot till hes dead, progress to having to shoot out red lights and pull pillars down with your grapple (so the boss doesnt regen), to smacking huge snakes in the head with overhead cages (i found it ****ing FUNNY btw).
The game covers much of the story between lara, and her parents as well as her now-evil friend amanda, (you get to see lil'lara and ****), the locations are radically different, from peru, to japan, to cornwall.. of all places.. and is well thought out, a must if you are a fan of the whole king arthur thing.
Guys, without a doubt, the tokyo level starts with you in a very skimpy black dress, you cant shoot or anything, till the yakuza boss sends his heavys after you and you dive over a table, and rip up your already tiny dress to reveal your panties, (black lace) as well as your guns, and spend the rest of the level roaming around rooftops and using motorbikes barefoor with your ass hanging out in plain view... reguardless of what outfit you wear theres always gratuitus breast shots to be had in tight spaces, and doing so just after getting out of water shots off.. well, "oh my god theyre wet and shiny!", and.. semi tranparent on some outfits (bloody pervs), and laras constant "oh that feels so nice" as you get in and out of various lakes/rivers/etc is just.. well, obviously perverted.
It's good!, and the bickering over the headset by the support guys is often as amusing as it is educational, with one of them making rather rude comments about people not understanding the concept of excalibur, making me laugh to the point where i fell to my death in a puddle of electricity.
If you're a tomb raider fan, your only excuse to miss this should be death
If not, take a look and you'll probably enjoy it.
P.s. if any of you get stuck, just pm me, i've completed multiple times so far :| (even though its a long game).
