I recommend a Sony Cyber-Shot. I own one and have never run into any issues or problems. It has great functions and wonderful flash. If he/she doesn't want that, get a PowerShot SD770 IS. It has tons of features, a wonderful LCD screen, and at 300$ US, your friend will love the price.
