will digital cameras one day have the same performace as film cameras?

despite the popoularity of digital cameras today and their improved quality (10 MP camera anyone?), professionals (such as the ppl who take my school photos :icon_bigg , paparazis, and photo shoots) still use the regular film cameras

so my question is, will the digital camera ever surpass the quality of film one day so that ALL ppl will use the digital camera instead of film ones? (just like how the MINIDVD cameracorders/HD cameracorders today are replacing the old-style camercorders that used those mini-cassettes)

I thought digital cameras already surpassed the quality of traditional film cameras.

Because they like the olden day style. They can't adjust. Like my dad refuses to use a digital camera for his photos. Heck, he even refuses to use a good film camera. My camera is better then his in everyway and his is an SLR that cost around 3 times as much as mine.

Most companies however choose to use digital cameras. Why? Most publications are made on computers, does it really make sense to scan the pictures in once they are developed?

I'm taking photography in Comm. Tech, so I'm proud that I even know what SLR means :D

You get professionals that say digital is not as good and you get professionals that say digital is better. Its all down to what you like about each one.. personally I prefer digital.. for one there isn't as much messing around and I can put them straight onto a computer and play with them in photoshop.. to do the same with film you have to buy some expensive equipment to scan the photos into a digital format.. and to get 10mp+ quality you need a really good scanner.

Digital is better for professionals as it allows them to be even more picky about their photos and they can delete the ones they don't want to bother with.. then again others might say that a professional doesn't need to delete photos as they should get the shot they need every time they press that capture button... but have you ever seen a pro curse and swear because they didn't get the shot they wanted because they couldn't see the result due to their film camera? It's funny when you've just had an argument about which is better :p

meh, like when ppl walk the red carpet, dont the ppl all use these big film cameras?

And btw, a greater amount of pixels doesn't necessarily mean greater image quality. It depends on the quality of the camera, the lens, and how far apart the dots are on the image sensor. That's why you'll never have a phone camera as good quality as an SLR camera.

If you could even bother to read the post directly above your's, you'd learn that MP rating means almost nothing when you're talking about camera quality. If I had a 10mp cameraphone, then I'd probably just take a picture full of noise.

You cant make a poster from 10mx15m with a Analog SLR (35mm)
With a profesional Digital SLR you can!

oke you can make a poster with the analog one but the quality of the digital one is lots better.

I use both the Nikon F100 (Analog camera) and the Nikon D1 (Digital) thy are both profesional tools but the digital is better.

in the future technology will develop so i guess yh maybe...

well i mentioned that camera because the thread was about performance, not practibility. but i think the new camera satilite Gaia, will have a gigapixel camera.

No real way to tell. Probably but then again, maybe not. The cameras work in different ways, so you can't be sure wheter or not the general quality is equal. Digital pictures are taken in a different way, so i don't think they will ever look exactly the same. Digital has taken the mainstream of normal people,but IMO, diehards will always use film, just because it might give it a little different touch than digital...

from my point of view digital is better and most professionals in my area use digital and my other point is that film is to expensive to devlope

This comment makes the most sense.

i lol for 3 reasons
1) as pointed out the mp value, while it does play a role, doesn't mean everything.
2) most people will resize their pictures to something like 800x600 for posting on websites, thus the huge resolution is pointless.
3) if your crap at composition you'll end up with photos that have really ugly noisey dark areas or poor focus ballancing, especially if you don't know your way around ISO etc.

for the record, i have taken pictures with a 5mpx high end camera, and a 8 megapixel little handhelp snappy thing, and while the high end camera wasnt far short of being half the mpx value, the pictures with infinately clearer, even when the 8mpx cameras pictures were resized to that of the 5mpx camera it was blazingly obvious which was better.

Long story short, just because that $220 camera says its 10mpx, the same as that $900, does not, and almost always fails to mean that the picture quality will be anywhere near the same.

I dont know if it has been said yet but the quality of the picture comes down to the object that does all the work, the lens.

Anyone with a SLR/DSLR camera knows that the lens does all of the work when it comes down to good photography. The digital CMOS has surpassed film capture.

If anything the lenses have only improved since the introduction of the DSLR. So I would say yes they will and that they have.

What do you use currently lucubrate?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT and a Minolta Z3 with a 10x optical zoom.
I primarily use the Rebel but I like to mix it up the Z3 has a better focal range at times than my stock Canon lens. Again it's all about the lens.
