There's this Platinum Games member named Kudo whose job is to lay down special effects on games to give them that extra oomph. In his own words, he adds the fire, smoke, and other stuff inside a game. It seems not a lot of people get his explanation, however, so he posted these two videos showing Bayonetta (PS3 and Xbox 360) with and without effects.
All I can say is what you're doing is a service, Mr. Kudo. Props to you. Oh, and if you're wondering why a giant foot comes out of nowhere and kicks bad guys away in some of the sequences above, just consider the fact that a lot of the people at Platinum Games were also responsible for a game whose final battle had you punching a giant demon in the teeth a lot.
Bayonetta is still carrying a TBD release date.
