This it to all you...
...people promoting the "Advert Removing" plugin for firefox.
Its adverts on this website that keep all the downloads, news updates and community free. If there were no ads on here you would have to pay for the content that you take for granted. If people who offer the ads, pay for their sites to be advertised know that everyone wast seeing them they wouldnt pay other websites to get their site promoted, and the people who show the ads wont get paid, in turn meaning no funding to host and provide a website.
Yes most of us wont pay for the premium service that PSPUpdates have offered. Maybe they'll find somthing that a lot of us would pay for. In the mean time, support the site and visit the adverts that interest you.
Well maybe if the advertisers did not post annoying flash popups/popunders I wouldn't. Usually advertisers who engage in popups do not stop there and this can lead to spyware installing on your machine.
i'm not about to turn off my firefox adblock plugins to the likes of someone who calls me a d-head and a wanker.
but i do see the angle your coming from, i've been a web designer and a webbmaster since i can remember and maintaining sites are extremely hard when the cash flow is a little slow. But I just cant take it when i have a pop up each page and banners galore.
Keep in mind that I was told to use Adblock _BY THE SITE ADMINISTRATORS_ themselves. In fact, I had never even heard of the plugin until I started complaining about teh more annoying, full page ads that I used to see.
I rarely click on web advertising since most of the time it's kind of vague about where it's going to link you to. So the fact that I can't see it doesn't cost them anything...
Besides, have you ever actually tried to read through those little Google ads? Just a lot of text that I usually ignore... :)
I don't mind some advertising on a site (in fact, I haven't blocked ALL the ads on this site), but the ridiculous quantity and irritation factor of some of the ads made me install the adblocker. I've had pop-up blockers installed for years (I wasn't even sure if these were still in use anymore), but never had a desire to block in-site ads until I started coming to this site. Their motto seems to be lets cram as many ads as possible on every page, it's just annoying and it triples the load time of the site. (And don't even get me started about the ads that appear filling the whole screen telling me to punch Pres Bush... What the hell are they even advertising, anyway? It's just stupid).
I guess the bigger problem is that PSPupdates doesn't monitor the ads themselves, they just farm themselves out to ad companies that will put up ads for anything they want (hence the Bush thing), not just PSP related stuff.
My suggestion would be:
Remove pop-ups if they are in use.
Remove Google ads and Intellitext, these are just annoying.
Spend a little time to hunt down some _GOOD_ advertising, and put it in a few banner ads around the borders of the main page. If it's WORTH clicking on, people will click on it.
Look at sites like AintItCoolNews.com- ads all over the place, but they aren't really annoying or get in the way, and most of them relate SPECIFICALLY to the topic of the website (and are actually sites the readers might really want to go to).
