Activations are tied to the ps3 itself, not the HDD. If you upgrade or change hard drives, you only have to redownload the game(s) or dlc.
It does NOT take an extra slot.

I've had a HDD fail on me recently. Take yours out of your ps3 and test it on a pc, you'll need a SATA to USB converter or your pc to accept SATA disks.
Windows won't recognize it but there are free, great softwares that will, e.g. CrystalDiskInfo. You could determine for certain if your HDD is the root of your problem.

what you're describing doesn't look to me as a failing HDD. You can't finish downloads or installs with one, or get stupid error codes with no google help (kept getting 80010038 then another).

Activations being tied to the system, I think something in your PS3 motherboard/flash memory is dying...what model you got?

oh noooo...i bought it a few months ago i dont need it dying lol (used of course >.<) . i dont have it at the moment, but when i get it ill check to see if i get any codes..i recall seing somethimg similar to that code though. its one of the fat ps3's not sure what actual model number though.

I recently downloaded episode one of Back to the future (because it was free) and was looking to get the whole thing. When I saw that it was $20 instead of $10 I was disappointed. I am also looking for an online pass for Uncharted 3, as the one that came with my game didn't work. I will add other information after I get a response.
