If you plan on getting both, 360 right now, PS3 later.
It will only get cheaper and by then the games you REALLY want (GT5, MGS, FF) will be out...
As far as people saying that 360 has reached it's limits, that's BS....xbox was almost literally a PC in a box...PC's have been around how long ? You'd figure they could "max it out" right away....well look at the leap from halo to halo 2.....now devs are dealing with multi-cored/threaded processors for the first time....even though 360 is "easier" to develop for then PS3....it's not easy by far and devs have alot to learn still.....that's why the probs with PS3, not only is it multiple processors, it's also using those processors in a new way that's not normal for multi-cored machines. Then you say that it's future proof...but where is the proof that it even CAN work to it's potential in a gaming environment....there is none...and to the contrary lot's of devs don't see it being as efficient as the 360 in a gaming environment...although it blows it away in a scientific environment...
Then Live, Ms doesn't have a year head start, they have about 10-15, as they have been doing online matchmaking/gaming on the PC forever, and on consoles since the first xbox...it's just better and started out with a unified structure in mind. PSN is just slapped together like a PC matchmaking system, Sony never intended for any type of unified system....therefore games that want to have indepth rankings and matchmaking based on skill, will have to program that feature in themselves and spend that much more time on development. Whereas Live has a "trueskill" system that functions with every game and devs just have to define some variables for it to work.
However, PS3 has it's strengths too....as it's not abismally worse then 360, if you are not a nitpicking graphics whore, then they perform the same for most people. Also with the 40gb it's not that much more then 360 and is in the range of affordable for a games console.
Then if you want something to play blu-ray you can't go wrong with PS3....but i'd honestly say if you want it for games, go 360 and get PS3 in about 6-12 months...
