I recently purchased a PS3 off of Ebay. Is there any way to determine, without the serial, whether it's PS2 compatibility is hardware or software? Maybe a PS2 game that doesn't work with the software compatibility, but does with hardware compatibility. Maybe just a homebrew program that prints out the system specs. Whatever the case, I would like to know.
First of all if it's a 60Gb it has a Emotion chip but if it's a 80Gb it must have 4 USB Ports in the front. An other thing to look at is if it has a Memory Card Reader.
Since the above post is correct and the only way I know how to tell, let me give some advise on your Ebay purchase:

Be wary, and be ready to contact PayPal and your Credit Card company. If the seller doesn't respond to you for a couple of days (especially if their account is showing activity) than file a PayPal dispute. If it's a choice between the PS3 or the money, ask for the money back. If the seller isn't responsible enough to have a large order taken care immediately than he is not a good seller.
I'm speaking from previous experience, and I know what it feels like to be scammed by buying a PS3 (multiple times :( ) I couldn't deal with it anymore and just ended up buying my PS3 from a store.
I don't mean to scare you, just trying to get you prepared in case something bad happens. Hopefully this won't be the case and you will be enjoying your PS3 soon.
