Ad-Hoc Party Guide

This is my first crack at creating a guide so hopefully people will find it useful. I found several guides online showing you how to host a game in Ad-Hoc Party, but none that really gave you a comprehensive guide to all the options in it. So here it goes…

* Remember in Japan Circle is used to select and X is used to cancel!

You don’t have to connect the PSP to the PS3 before you start setting up your game in Ad-Hoc Party, but it’s a good idea that you at least try it when you use Ad-Hoc Party for the first time so you at least know that it connects properly.

The first time you start up Ad-Hoc Party it will take you through a series of screens to accept Sony’s Terms of Service. It took several menu choices and I didn’t pay attention when I was doing it so hopefully you can get through it ok.

Main Menu options:
• Option 1 - is where you find other players and host/join games
• Option 2 - is where you can jump directly to lobbies where people in your friends list are or to lobbies you’ve been to before (see Quick Jump to Lobby).
• Option 3 - is where you go to connect your PSP to your PS3
• Option 4 - contains an online manual for Ad-Hoc Party (unfortunately, it’s in Japanese)


To connect the PSP to the PS3:
1. Start Ad-Hoc Party on the PS3 and on the main menu go down to the third option and press circle.
2. The PS3 will start searching for your PSP.
3. Start your PSP game and go into the multiplayer Lobby. Make sure to turn on the Wi-Fi switch.
4. The name of your PSP will show up in the PS3. Press circle on the LEFT option to stay connected to the PSP.
5. You will now be taken to the World select. Each world represents a server. There are 10 worlds (A-J) and each world has 64 lobbies that can hold 32 players each.
6. L1 and R1 will cycle through the worlds.
7. I’m not 100% sure but I think if you choose a world and click Circle on it, it will search to see if there are any available games the same as yours hosting in that world and jump you directly into the lobby where the game is hosted. If not, it will return a message and just click X to go back to the world select.
8. I usually just click X to go back to the Main Menu.


Navigating the Ad-Hoc Party Worlds:
1. Go to the first item on the Main Menu and press circle, you will be taken to 'World A'. To navigate from one world to another use the L1 and R1 buttons. World J is the one used most by English speaking people.
2. Press L1 to go to World J and press Circle to enter it. Using either analog sticks find lobby 50 (or the lobby of your choice) and press circle to select the lobby. Lobby 50 is known to be an 'English Speaking Lobby'.
3. Lobby traffic (the number of users in the lobby) is illustrated by a colored character icon. There are four colors: grey for empty lobbies, blue for lobbies containing 1-15 users, orange for lobbies containing 16-26 users and red for lobbies containing 27-32 users.
4. When you select a lobby you will see a close up of the lobby with more information.

A. The number above the character icon represents the number of users in the lobby.

B. The number above the green house represents the number of hosting rooms in the lobby.

C. The number above the orange building represents the number of password protected rooms (rooms you cannot enter unless you know the password) in the lobby.

D. The number next to the smiley face is the number of PSN friends in the lobby.

5. Press Circle to enter the lobby (or X to go back to the World select). You can also go up or down using the analog stick (or D-Pad) to choose the lobbies above or below the one selected.
6. If you get a message when you pressed Circle to enter a lobby that usually means that it is full. Just press X to go back to the lobby select and choose another lobby.


Quick Jump to Lobby:
1. From the Main Menu select the second item. When you press Circle to select it, it will bring up a submenu with two options.
2. Option 1 will bring up a list of your friends that are currently in Ad-Hoc Party. Choose one using the D-Pad and press Circle. Press Circle again on the button to jump to the lobby that they are in. Press X to cancel.
3. Option 2 is used to jump to lobbies that you have visited before. When you press Circle on option 2 it will bring up another submenu with two more options.

A. Option 1 will bring up a list of lobbies that you have visited in this instance of Ad-Hoc Party. If you have just opened Ad-Hoc Party this list will be empty, but if you enter a lobby and then exit back to the Main Menu, you will see those lobbies in this list. When you select a lobby using the D-Pad and press Circle you have two choices: The first button will jump to that lobby, the second button will remove the lobby from the visited lobbies list. Press X to cancel.

B. Option 2 will bring up a list of ‘Favorite’ lobbies (see ‘Navigating the Lobby’ below to add lobbies to your ‘Favorite’ list). When you select a lobby using the D-Pad and press Circle you have two choices: The first button will jump to that lobby, the second button will remove the lobby from the ‘Favorite’ lobbies list. Press X to cancel.

Navigating the Lobby:
1. Once in a lobby you may see other people, to talk to them press Start to bring up the onscreen keyboard.
2. When you move the analog stick it will bring up a targeting circle. If you move the targeting circle to an empty spot and press Circle, a menu with two options will popup.

A. Option 1 – Moves your character to the designated spot. Press circle to move your character.

B. Option2 – is used to create a new hosting room (see below for more info on hosting a room)

3. If you move the targeting circle over another character and press Circle you will get a popup menu with three options.

A. Option 1 – will move your character next to them.

B. Option 2 – is used to send a message. The same as if you just pressed Start.

C. Option 3 – is used to send a friend request to that person

4. In addition to other users you will see houses. Each house represents a game being hosted by another user. Unfortunately, you won’t know what game they are playing until you enter the house. Some of the houses are named based on what game is being played, but not always. In order to tell what game they are playing, you will have to enter an open house and ask them.
5. There are Five different type of houses:

A. Houses with an open door are open to anyone.

B. Houses with no door are full or closed and you cannot enter them.

C. Houses with a key icon are password protected (you cannot enter without the password).

D. Houses that have an X icon on them, not sure what this means yet.

E. Houses that look like buildings are for hosting games that support up to 8 players, regular houses are for games that support up to 4 players.

6. To see more information about a hosted game move the targeting circle over a house and press Circle. You will get two popups: The first popup has the name of the house, the number of people in the house vs total number that can join, and the description the user entered for the house. The second popup is an actions menu (see below).
7. To enter a house, move the targeting circle over the house that has an open door and press Circle to bring up the actions menu with two options.

A. Option 1 – will move you character next to the house

B. Option 2 – is used to enter the house

8. While inside a house you have the following options:

A. If you have a headset hooked up you can chat with the other people in the room.

B. Press Start to send the other users a message (you can use this to ask them which game they are playing, if you don’t already know and don’t have a headset)

C. L1 and R1 decreases/increases the size of the text in the message window.

D. Press Select to bring up a message window where you can enter a comment for your character (ex: Monster Killer).

E. Pressing Square will change your character picture to an outline, not sure what this does but maybe a way to set your character status to ‘be right back’. Pressing Square again will set character picture back to normal.

F. Press Triangle to exit the house. Choose the First option, and then choose the Left option to the exit.

9. From within the lobby you can also press Triangle to bring up the lobby menu. The lobby menu has four options:

A. Option 1 – will bring up a list of your friends that are currently in Ad-Hoc Party. Choose one using the D-Pad and press Circle. Press Circle again on the button to jump to the lobby that they are in. Press X to cancel.

B. Option 2 – Brings up another submenu with three more options.

I. Option 1 – Brings up a list of lobbies that you have visited in this running instance of Ad-Hoc Party. To remove a lobby from the list, choose one using the D-Pad, select it by pressing Circle, and press Circle on the button to remove it from the list. Press X to cancel.

II. Option 2 – Has a list of your ‘Favorite’ lobbies. To remove a lobby from this list choose one using the D-Pad, select it by pressing Circle, and press Circle on the button to remove it from the list. Press X to cancel.

III. Option 3 – Adds the current lobby to your ‘Favorite’ list. To add the current lobby to this list press Circle on the Left option.

C. Option 3 – Brings up a chat window showing the list of messages that all the people in the lobby sends. From here press Start to bring up the on screen keyboard. L1 and R1 decreases/increases the size of the text in the message window. Press X to go back to the lobby menu.

D. Option 4 – is used to exit the lobby. The first option takes you back to the World select screen. The second option takes you back to the Main Menu.

Hosting a Game:
1. Using the analog stick move the targeting circle to a clear spot in the lobby (or directly over your character).
2. Press Circle and choose the second option (if the targeting circle was on your character there is only one option to choose).
3. Now you can see 5 hosting options.

A. Option 1 – is the name for the house. Pressing Circle will bring up the on screen keyboard. It is a good idea to name the house after the game you will be playing.

B. Option 2 – is the description for the house. Pressing Circle will bring up the on screen keyboard. Here you can put a longer description on the game you are hosting to help people out so they don’t have to enter the house just to see what you are playing. If you don’t enter anything, a default description will be entered in Japanese.

C. Option 3 – is used to set a password on the house. Only people who know the password can enter the house.

D. Option 4 – not sure what this is used for. Defaults to On, if you set to Off it creates a house with an X on it.

E. Option 5 - not sure what this is used for. Defaults to On, can’t determine what changes when you set to Off.

4. The buttons at the bottom creates the room. The Left one creates a house that supports up to 4 players, the Right one creates a building that supports up to 8 players. Press Circle to create the room.
5. Once you have created the room, players that enter the house will show up as an icon in the lobby screen of Ad-Hoc Party and you will see them in the lobby of the PSP game.
6. The lobby in Ad-Hoc Party has the following options:

A. Press Start to bring up a message window to send messages to the other users.

B. Press Select to enter a comment for your Character (ex: Monster Killer).

C. L1 and R1 decreases/increases the size of the text in the message window.

D. Press Square to change your character picture to an outline, not sure what this does but maybe a way to set your character status to ‘be right back’. Pressing Square again will set character picture back to normal.

E. Press Triangle to bring up the hosting menu with the following options:

I. Option 1 – is used to close the hosting room. To exit press Circle, then chose the option on the Left.

II. Option 2 – is used to change the description of your house, press circle to bring up the onscreen keyboard.

III. Option 3 – is used to open/close the door on the house. An open door means people can enter the house, a closed door means no one can enter. You should close the door if your party is full or if you don’t want anyone else to enter. The Left button opens the door; the Right button closes the door.

IV. Option 4 – is used to Kick a player from the room. It removes them from the house and they CANNOT come back in! Select a player using the D-Pad and press Circle to Kick them out.

That’s it! If anyone finds any errors or knows what some of the options that I couldn’t figure out are, just post them and I will update the guide.

Also, I was thinking that since Monster Hunter is the predominant game being played in Ad-Hoc Party right now, it’s easy to find MH rooms but harder to find players/rooms for other games. It may be a good idea to know what Worlds/Lobbies people usually use to host other games. If you post it here I will update the guide so it will be easier for people to find.

Well it's not really a game. Ad-Hoc Party is an application that Sony released in Japan awhile ago (hopefully it will come to the US eventually) that allows you to connect your PSP to your PS3 and play multiplayer PSP games that were designed for ad-hoc play only. It uses the PS3 as the internet relay point so PSPs can connect to each other. It also gives you voice chat through the PS3 while your playing the game. Even though it was only released in Japan, it still works on US PS3s, but the menus are all in japanese.

i downloaded it when it came out i didn't understand how it worked exactly so i deleted it its an awesome idea tho now that you explained it i think i understand it now.. lathough i don't have a psp anymore.. will save this for later

ok so i got this all downloaded and installed. had to update to version 1.7 also. im having a problem tho, i cant seem to join in any worlds. i select the first thing, go over to world J and press O but nothing, it dosnt give me anything saying anything. i have tryed pairing my psp first, that takes me to worlds that all bring up something and says X like you said above. but at the first selection i can see the worlds and thay all have what looks like 1 going around the letter of the world, it wont let me do anything but L1 and R1 to change the worlds and exit.

Hey foxdog, sorry it took so long to respond. My bad, there's a mistake in the guide. You don't have to press Circle to enter a world after you choose it using L1/R1. Just go to the world then choose a lobby using the analog stick and then press circle to enter a lobby. I'll update the guide, sorry for the mixup.

its all good. i downloaded the promo video on it and got it from that :) its kinda funny i printed off your tut and i sit their lookin at it while i do the whole ad hoc party thing. its just like you said tho, world j room 50, mostly engligh people :) i made a few friends already. i just wish my mhfu worked the case broke. i guess i just need to buy it again
