Well i red a lot of wrong ideas in here :-/
So due to the fact that the kernel of linux could be port on several hardware (taht is why you could find it on ipod, psp, servers etc etc etc) they WILL be a "true" linux on PS3
Yellow Dog had annouced that they will provide a PS3 port of their distribution (including all the usual features of yellow dog).
Due to the open source model of the GPL license (used for many linux components) modifications to make linux run on PS3 could be used to port other distro on it
As far as i know some Linux Ubuntu dev are playing with kernel to make a clean port.
So yes the PS3 will be a real computer (their is nothing a linux couldn't do)
We don't know that, there will be things Sony lock off to prevent it as a gateway for piracy.Zitat:

r u kidding, i doubt PS3 will be able to play N64 games like the pc lol
if a good emulator has been ported to Linux my answer would be a big YES.
It make me think that you will have no need to buy your games through sony's network, because some very good PSX emulator exist under linux.
Yes linux is homebrew heaven
I dont understand how just having a OS makes the ps3 a computer. Many gadgets(psp and ipod for example) have OS but arent considered a computer. This is one of the big reasons I hate the ps3. Too many extra features makes you forget what it really is a video game system. Extra features are nice but when the extra features overshadowed the core of what the product is, then there's a problem imo. If sony didnt add all these unnecessary features that could probably sell the ps3 for the same price if not cheaper then the xbox 360. If the ps3 doesnt allow like everything to run(which it wont) like a real pc does and allow it to hook up to a printer(which it might) and allow you to browse the internet and download stuff off the internet straight to your harddrive then its not a pc.Zitat:

Can you please list the extra features?
All I can think of is the web browser.
Blu ray
Then HD-DVD is a unnessacery extra on the XBOX360.
Looks like Wii is the only normal one :p
It is a unnecessary extra, which is why you can buy it seperately if you want it.Zitat:

Wii is going back in time and using those 800MB disc'sZitat:

Haha, yeah, BIG mistake on Nintendo's part there.Zitat:

yes the ps3 will have bluedog linux from what ive seen and it has the cell processor which i think has 8 core?(not sure) and awesome video
The Wii uses 9GB disks...Zitat:

Can the PS3 be used as a computer? Damn right it can.
First, with many USB keyboards and mouses (mice?) reported working and Bluetooth keyboards and mouses compatible, you've got that covered.
And also the PS3 can install ANY OS. ANY. http://ps3.qj.net/How-to-install-ano...g/49/aid/72538
also note that the ps2 chipset(of which is being used in a ps3 for backwards compatibility) contains the same chipset as the ps1(look on wikipedia)so,in essence, the ps3 has a built in ps1 and 2.so far all of my ps1 and 2 games are running fine on my ps3 btw.Zitat:

To be fair we should call it PS6Zitat:

PS3 + PS2 + PS1
but anyway it all depends on how you would be using either one.if you just want media and games and such go with ps3.its cheaper, easier and more centraly supported.but if you want to have something that you need to encompass most everything that you do,youll need a pc.basically if your just getting a pc simply because you want to have fun,get a ps3.if you getting a pc because you need it for school and you have pressure constantly to get a pc,then Id go for the pc.IE:if your getting a pc just for another pc,get a ps3.otherwise,go for ps3
I think the PS3 does support HB, through linux.
I mean everything, and yes, it can replace your computer.
Think about it, Keyboard + Mouse, any Linux OS, and any TV (where are you all getting the i need an HDTV to use a PS3 thing?)
You would just need to download the PPC version of your favorite program/emulator (PJ64 = Nintendo 64, SNES9X, FrostWire, Firefox, WINE, QEMU (X86 emulator, free, Run windows on your PS3), go to liflg.org to get the installers for your favorite PC game.
PS3-game on
^ Are you serious?, an OS is on PS3 and you can play emulators?, wow.
Not yet, no emulators have been ported to run on the Cell.Zitat:
Zitat von dellis
cell = PowerPC
just some light patching will do
I'd say if it would of had more ram then yes.
If it ends up being able to run WINE or X11 and then some of the linux powerpoint and word ripoff programs, then ya, i'd say it'd be somewhat practical.
Thing is, it's going to be very technical to setup and use stuff under linux....so if you and/or your mom are not too tech savy, then forget about it....the fact your just asking this question makes me think you are not....if i'm wrong, I apologize in advane....
