Yeah you don't require a router for connectivity but it should give a NAT type 1.
Why dont you use the Router which you have, and use the Wireless feature of the PS3 and see if things change... If you haven't already tried the PS3's wireless... :p

I mean why don't they see if the connection is better/worse when using a Wired Internet connection or a Wireless Internet connection on the PS3...
I've already tried it. I think the ISP (wirehand.net) acts like a giant router, it has to be them blocking the ports. I'm gonna contact them, on the 2nd, they're off the rest of the weekend. :(
