PS3 laser burned out is a common problem
The Blu Ray failure on PS3 is a common fault. The Blu Ray section of the laser has been failing on many units all around the world and, would you believe it, just outside of Sony's 12 month warranty.
Sony will not repair the problem, their only solution is to send you a replacement Playstation3 and take your old one. The cost for this in the UK is £144.
Seems to me Sony could do a better job and replace the failed lasers rather than changing the whole console.
I had the exact same problem and took it to Playbackups.com where they changed the laser for me for £80. I got to keep my own PS3 with all the information I had stored on the hard drive.
There are places all over the world doing similar services and saving us poor customers money and time from going through Sony's total replacement policy.
