okeydoke, this has been killing me for 24 hours now, hope any of you guys can help out a newbie...
i have a new(ish) 40gb PS3, it's the one where the HDD pulls straight out, not the one where you have to slide the caddy to the right to remove...
anyways, i replace the HDD with a new one and hardware-wise, everything looks fine. when i boot up my ps3 it says it cannot find the firmware and i need to reload it, ok, that threw me a bit, but checking forums that seems what you have to do these days (all the guides are out of date! )
so i put 2.42 on a usby stick (\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP ) and hit start and select to load, after a while of checking, it comes back and says no applicable update data was found, this happens with a couple of usb sticks and mem cards i have.
i 'know' i have put the files in the right place, because when i stick the old hdd back in (everything works ok), and go to do a manual firmware update, it looks at the mem stick and tells me 2.42 is in there ready to go!
any help will be greatly appreciated!!
oh, and by the way, i do not know, and cannot tell if the new hdd is formatted or not, but from what i have read this shouldn't make a difference?
edit: a thought occurs... is a firmware downgrade possible, where it doesn't need to have part of it on the hdd.... searching the net makes me think no, but you never know

ok, i sorted it
i put the update file on my psp (same directory structure) and it worked
no idea why tho
thanks to anyone who looked ;)
