Hello everyone, I apologise for creating a new thread on what may well be a common problem but I have searched and searched for an answer and had no luck.
I recently got myself a pal PS3, my HDTV supports 720p and 1080i. I am connected over an HDMI cable at present. I bought the console pre-owned and I have not got a manual to check although I have scoured the online manual on the sony website.
I noticed that I would get screen tearing when playing ps3 games but not ps2 games at 720p.
I have narrowed down the source of the problem to the refresh rate of the games - the ps2 games run in 50hz while the ps3 games run at 60hz. I confirmed this by testing ICO at 720p; 50hz had no tearing while 60hz had tearing. I get no tearing at 1080i regardless of the refresh rate.
A few of my games such as Uncharted and Resistance and Little Big Planet will not display in 1080i mode and therefore have fairly distracting screen tearing (I am aware Uncharted is prone to tearing anyway). I have found that running the games in 576p also eliminates the tearing, along with the nice HD graphics.
My question is this, is there any way to get my PS3 to output games in 720p at 50hz? I am more than willing to buy a new cable e.g. component (my tv does not support D-terminal) and I will have a go at installing Linux and using a tool called ps3videomode (?) if that will be of any help.
Thank you very much for reading and I would really appreciate any help you can offer, even if it's just a link to another post containing the information.
