What's a cell?
the processor in the ps3...if this is what this thread is about...
just read it...guess sony will be making losses once the new console comes out...didn't really think they wouldn't have.
your joking right, By Sony its going to replace the processor and is more advance than a GPU. It's GODQuote:

So thats....good? lol sorry, not much of a techie.
It's basically a microprocessor that be likened to an entire PC (tech-wise) in a very small space. It can process and decode things like video, and audio without any extra hardware.
Here's some more information
I want to see it in action. So it like a sound card too?...
It would basically work like integrated audio, but it would take up less space, and wouldn't suffer quality-wise as normal integrated audio does.
Oh...so the ps3..will have an audio card? or no?....i'm not very techie when it comes to consoles
The sound is indeed being handled completely by the cell. However the RSX card is helping the cell with video, mainly for the dual 1080p output.
The only downside to all this is the price of the cell and the fact its hard to program for.
The price to manufacture it is obviously not going to be passed down to the consumer in anyway, so I don't think the average gamer has to worry much about that. Although the hurdle to develop multithreaded code is an obvious factor.
Not the full price but some of the price will beQuote:

how did sony make a profit off the ps2
we will be paying for the card through the games we buy.
I'm torn between the PS3 and the 360...
Halo 2...or Killzone 2 lol
I'm an FPS fan but I love rpg's too. (Mainly action rpg's)
Halo 2...on the 360...versus Killzone 2(isn't that the pre-rendered vid game?) on the ps3...
i think you mean ^^^Quote:

Action RPGs are 360. Turn based is PS3.Quote:

I'm glad you said "some other crappy RPGs" under ps3...almost could have been taken the wrong way...lol
Been talkingto a guy who works for $ony in the Uk and he has told me a few things they are having problems with and as a result in the UK a pre-christmas 2006 launch will be a rush job and as a result of the incresed cost of the cell processor will mean that the console will be looking at a retail in the region of £450 and £500 quid.
I asked him if they would do anything if they had to go into a pricewar with microsoft they would in no way consider offering anything to the consumers that pay full price at launch, unlike whart M$ did with the original Xbox.
Message to anyone who bought a ps2 and is considering a ps3:
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!
Wait until about 6 to 9 months after launch, sony will be suffering as the playstation is the only thing keeping them going and get it for a reasonable price, don't be an idiot and let them fool you twice! :dj:
ok saying a guy from sony is bunk, he could be anybody. he could be the urinal attendant for the ceo's, and there is no solid proff to anything he says.
yes sony is going to loose money on the ps3, they loose money on every console they make. their loss our gane.
sony's main income is NOT on just playstation. saying that is very ignorant. you forget they are one of the biggest electronics developers in the world.
they make alot of money on tv's and cameras, and other stuff.
they have alot of things in the works that deal nothing with video games, so it would be wise to look it up before you go spouting off about it.
Stitch I know my stuff if you did too then you would know that over the last 12 months sony have lost market share in virtually every category including digital cameras, and TV's which you mention. The brand perception of $ony has fallen into the middle ground which is reflected in their poor trading performance.
My friend that I spoke to is part of the PS3 project team so he won't be wiping the ceo's a$$! and he has never let me down before.
He informs me that they are reliant on the success of the PS3 to turn things around for the brand and put $ony back in with Coca-Cola's of this world.
Actually Sony are currently making a profit from every PS2 sold and their Playstation business IS their main source of profits at the moment, most other divisions are losing money, not earning.Quote:

yes parts of sony is looseing money , but what most are saying is that they are only getting profits form their playstation line. especially if you see how much they have sold in the different quarters.
companies loose market share all the time. why is microsoft making game consoles? to gain market share from their competition.
and the prob with people saying "i know someone" really does not measure up to anything, at all. also you are making speculations and saying for people to trust you.
14 posts with no backing and you say trust you. you are not going to gain peoples confidence to easily unless you have provenwhat you say. you say that your friend has never let you down, yea and we don't know who he is just what you say.
what it comes down to is what sony is going to do. if you have been following sony you would know what they have been doing besides just in gaming.
gaming will not be what keeps sony going. they have been around for years before there was a playstation and they will be around for a while yet.
they are not just reliant on the ps3 to turn things around. that is foolish nonsense.
another reason is because of how much people spend now. we don't spend as much because of the growing prices and people wanting to save more. so that means sacrificing quality in order to save.
alot of companies are having problems, look at statistics for most companies.
I don't see anything bad really happening to sony...i think the ps3 will do well...hopefully it won't be too expensive...but if it is..i'm sure millions of people will buy it anyhow...hopefully they have a good launch line up.
Hi everyone, this is my first post, and I believe that sony will offer pricing equal to the quality of the product. If that means that it will cost 500$ and you can afford it, im sure it'll be a good purchase ;) . Lets all be realistic, a blu-ray drive + Linux capabilties (that surely will support home-made stuff) + what the hell, its a PS3, it cant be bad :Punk: = selling your little brother on ebay. :D

I think i'm going to buy because of all that...plus what they show me at CES...hopefully they will show a releae date
