You can watch DVD's but not VCR on the PS3.
8. When will the PS3 be released?
Sony have announced that the PS3 will debut in Spring 2006 though this could be pushed to a Summer 2006 release.
9. How much will the PS3 cost?
As of right now, there is no set price for the PS3. There has been talk (and when I say talk I mean it could be complete rumor) that there may possible be two different models of the PS3, a basic one which will be more available because of a lower price, and a more expensive PS3 with more advanced features. Right now, we don't know if this is true, but if it is, there will be two different prices.
10. How many controller ports will there be or will it be wireless?
From what we know so far there will be 4 controller ports and it will NOT be wireless though this could be subject to change. There is also the chance of a multi pad adapter as there was on the PS2 though this is not known for sure.
11. What is Blu - Ray?
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD). There are different types of blue ray disk:
A single-layer disc can fit 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB.
A dual-layer disc can fit 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB.
To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.
They will be sold for approximately $26 meaning games could besold for about $35 - $45.
12. What is "The Cell"?
Well, there has been many reports on the PS3, and many which have actual information on the system. The PS3's will run on a Cell Processor. This is a new chip designed by Sony especially for the PS3. The chip will run at 4 ghz and contains 8 subprocessors. Sony have also announced that they plan to spend 1.14 billion dollars to build the next generation of microchips. The specs are as followed:
Contains 8 SPUs each containing a 128 entry 128-bit register file and 256KB Local Store
Contains 64-bit Power ArchitectureTM with VMX that is a dual thread SMT design
views system memory as a 10-way coherent threaded machine
2.5MB of on Chip memory (512KB L2 and 8 * 256KB)
234 million transistors
Prototype die size of 221mm2
Fabricated with 90nanometer (nm) SOI process technology
Cell is a modular architecture and floating point calculation capabilities can be adjusted by increasing or reducing the number of SPUs.

There has also been predictions that the Apple and Sony are forming an alliance with the Cell chip
It has been confirmed that the Japanese DRAM producer Elpida are set to supply Sony with chips for the Playstation 3
13. Tell me about the PS3's GPU (graphics processing unit)
Sony have teamed up with Nvidia to help them create a new graphics processing unit (GPU). The GPU will set the foundation for the PS3's graphics systems. There are no specs on the chip. It is still in developing stages, but there has been some speculation that the Nvidia GPU will be using the technologies found in the NV40 or NV50 versions of their graphics chips. According to Nvidia's chief Jen-Hsung Huang, the Playstation 3 will use Sony's API for the console. It is also suggested that the PS3 will use XDR DRAM memory, developed by Rambus. Nvidia have also stated that the new GPU will be ready at the end of 2005.
14. Do you have any pictures of the blue ray?
15. Below is a possible picture of the PS3 disk drive
16. Will the PS3 hook up with the PSP in any way?
After alot of speculation it has been confirmed that the PSP will hook up with the PS3.
2005Some interesting information has been leaked by the U.S. Patent Office regarding the PS3's future capabilities with Sony's own PSP handheld. Sony has recently filed a patent number 20040266529 [December 2004], which shows the PS3 and PSP will have wireless connectivity, and will be able to share content such as games, movies and music.
Some information from the patent outlines some key details:
"Broadly speaking, the present invention fills these needs by providing a system, a method, and a portable game device. The method of the system and portable game devices enables execution of a video game at a base computing device and wirelessly communicates processed data to a portable game device."
"In operation 252, the selected game is executed on the server, and the data representing processed game instructions, are communicated to define video and audio signals on the portable entertainment device. User input signals are also exchanged between the server and the portable entertainment device to interactively use the game during a gaming session. In operation 254, the video and audio data that is representative of the video game play is presented on the portable entertainment device, and processed data is continually streamed to the portable entertainment device to provide seamless interactive game play."
"In another embodiment, the local home user will be able to access their home server 102 to gain access to their games or media database that includes games that were previously purchased, or access a game that is currently being executed or to be executed on the game console 103. In each case, main processing of the video game program will occur at a location that is remote from the portable game device 108a. In this manner, the user of the portable game device 108a will have a rich content experience without having to purchase expensive hardware that may be bulky or consume an unnecessary amount of battery power."
This information tells us that Sony had even bigger plans for the PSP from the start. It will be feature-rich, and deeply involved with the PS3. If you haven't found that one last excuse to buy the PSP, this is it. We'll keep you updated when more details emerge. You can click below for the entire patent.
