Yaeh that'd be pretty cool but I dunno how they'd do it. No chance of a pay-per-download because then you'd have an ISO on your PS3 and people would want to transfer it to their PSP and Sony wouldn't release an official umd emulator now would they.
Unless you could transfer a UMD to the HDD I suppose, but Sony has now got to make a program and sign it so we can rip it and people will blatently use this official one to then circulate them illegally.
Slim chance but it'd be good.

I heard some announcement about a company making a deal with Sony to sell a version of Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3. YLD Linux is a distro for PPC. I doubt that it's true but I don't think it would allow for bootlegged games to be run. But who would care? I can already run a full Linux distro on my new PC that cost significantly less than a PS3 even after I bought upgrades for it.

First of all, it's not a rumor, it's a fact. Second of all, it will be free. Finally, it will be fully functional with no restrictions and the PS3 supports usb keyboards. :tup:

The PS3 is completley different to a PC, we won't see it playing PC games.

If PS3 would be hacked , then definitely it can install Windows.

if they can port linux to it they can port windows and mac to it. its just a matter of reason. why would you. if they release a ps3 HDD to SATA adapter then you could hook up a HDD that would then make a reason but there wouldnt be a point wit only 60 (or 20) gigs.

Let's just remember that PC games are generally written for Windows OS, which runs on Intel and AMD processors NOT PPC, which Cell is based on. One might try to run Windows software using Wine + YDL for PS3 but that would be too slow for any games. There better be a USB keyboard for the PS3, otherwise, there would be no point trying to run any extra OS like Linux on it. Typing characters with a controller is painfully slow. What about mouse? Using the analog stick would be ok for mouse but the distro would have to include a driver or software that would support it. I bought a gamepad for the PC that came with windows software that let me use the gamepad's analog stick as a mouse. Either that or a USB mouse is necessary.

That's because Apple recompiled it for the X86 line of processors.
In order to run an OS on the PS3 it would to be recompiled to run on the Cell processor...

dude all im sayin is what ever you think the cap of the useability of the ps3 is your wrong it will go far beyond what anyone can fatham at first because no one has opened one yet...and all you need is hope and you can do anything with hard ware...take the mrobe 500i no one said there would be homebrew and video..well guess what we have doom on that and a pda os......Plus blue dog linux is gonna be good enough

I don't really want to play new PC games just the old ones from 2000-2003 like Magic the gathering Battlegrounds or Etherlords 1 AND 2 that would be pretty neat and I would not get lag since the PS3 is not doing much in the backround. It is simply a hope or a dream but we all simple doubt it.

I never expected Windows 95 on the PSP but it happened. It ran very very slow but still. You might also see Windows 95 on the PS3. It'll happen when it happens. :p Or never. Who knows at this point?

im about 98.785% sure we will have at least 98 running of PS3 through linux!

I heard at a Game Conference a Sony Rep. say that you'll be able to use a USB Keyboard to type messages to your friends online in the XMB. I'm not sure about Linux though, If they code drivers for it I am sure that you'll be able to use USB keyboards. I'm not sure about mouses though, I assume you will be able to use one, but I'm not 100% sure!

most likely it will support keyboards and a mouse! (maybe even thumbdrives!)

i am in japan with my ps3.it does support keyboards,as i have done so in chat rooms to test it.bluetooth is very sketchy atm,only letting very basic peripherals work.

yes because it says that it will have blue dog(or a diff color dont remember) linux and also in the ps3 xmb theres a spot to install different os but i think the problem will be that windows wont support the hardware and probly never will unless some one makes the drivers...so yes and it will be linux
