Concerning this portion from the QJ.NET PS3 WIKI GENTOO installation with the 4 TARBELL
Edit the make.conf file and add the last line. Do not touch the rest of the sections above! Edit /etc/make.conf to add GRP package repository # nano -w /etc/make.conf Edit the make.conf file and add the last line. Do not touch the rest of the sections above! # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically # built this stage. # Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example. CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mtune=970 -mcpu=970 -mabi=altivec" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mtune=970 -mcpu=970 -mabi=altivec" # This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing. You # should probably be using a different stage, instead. CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage" PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://ftp-chi.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All/" I finished the entire setup and I have a working version of gentoo (i think) because I can access fluxbox, KDE base, and GNOME; BUT I DO NOT HAVE THE FOLLOWING LINE IN MY MAKE.CONF PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage" What does this line do? ( I added the last line and all the other lines were already present but did not add the second to last due to the instructions.) Additionally the only resolution I can access in GNOME and KDEbase is very small (576X?) which makes the windows to large to view in their entirety. Also I have already tried the PS3VIDEOMODE -f -d -v 33 and -v 1 this did not help me with the screen resolutions that were available within the GUIs. and the GENTOO fonts are way to small (i have a BIG SCREEN) I realize that using a GUI with gentoo kind of defeats the purpose, but I have never used linux before so I am trying to learn the hardest one first, but I felt I needed a GUI for redundancy and retention. Also do these install instructions provide support for all the SPEs? If the GENTOO and install instructions from QJ.NET do support the CPU and the other SPEs is it safe to assume that whatever I compile (emerge) on GENTOO will be optimized for using the full potential of all the processors the PS3 has to OFFER? Or will I be forever running at 1.5 Gz? Is everything that I EMERGE automatically optimized for a ps3 after following these instructions to a T or are there other things that I can do to optimize? also I know this is NEWB but once I EMERGE something given these instructions the only thing I know how to do is ls sessions and BOOT to the newly installed (i.e. DEFAULT = flux gnome or KDE) I find that the stuff available to emerge seems very cryptic is there somewhere where I might learn to quickly understand the basic linux# commands? If I were to emerge an application what would by the syntax to execute the compiled application? What is the syntax for viewing DIRs? I am an old hat at windows, but Linux just seems like so much more fun.... There are certain places that provide cross platform versions of the software I wish to use on my PS3. They have a windows EXE, they also have a LINUX .RUN file and a MAC OS source code. I was under the impression that using GENTOO I would benefit more from compiling SOURCE code as opposed to using a BINARY COuld somone clarify this for me? Can a linux system compile MAC OS source code? Please excuse my newbieness. THnx. |
