Default emerge --update ?

The two aplications I Installed both have problems:
-mplayer compiled by me runs ok on KDE but gives an error about the output (-vo) when using the first video driver, the second driver works but the resize doesn't work, only the window, not the video, changes.

-vlc emerged with -G has no GUI and when I resize the window the subtitles get all messed up with gigantic sizes.

If I were to recompile with some new USE flags to try to fix the errors could I use emerge --update ... to save some compile time?

No, emerge --update is used when there's a new version of any package is available. If you want to re-compile it with new use flags, use emerge --newuse vlc

Thanks, I'll try that right away.
Mplayer works with some options on the command line but the audio and video get out of sync when in fullscreen! Is this a bug?
