Today i bought the HD cables for my PS3 and had already installed gentoo, but i set it to run in 480i, how do i set it to run in 1080i?

I have tried to get my tv into 1080i but it just comes up wrong. Im having to use 720p at the moment. I have a 26" sony bravia and im using a HDMI cable. has anybody else had this problem and does anybody know how to resolve it?
