I have Ubuntu on my laptop and I didn't have to do anything special to get wireless working, I thought it was something to do with the PS3 itself.

k im a noob and in school (and it isnt working ) and i have a question...if i DL this and try to install it, how can i backup my ps3 files...such as my loved warhawk and demos and stuff that i dont want to get erased witht he format? (specially warhawk and ones i payed for) cause fedora core failed at installing and its just been siting there sucking and this looks ALOT easier to install and set up then core 6 so i wanna try this if i can.

also this might be posted somewhere, im not sure, but does the built in ps3 wireless adapter thing work with ubuntu so i can use wireless internet on it? or is it like the others where you need a cable for the internet?

-= Double Post =-
ok, WTF, in the proceses tab i try to kill everything liek the guide says, i go down the list 1 by 1 and i kill it, then i kill the next and the other one comes back and they wont stay away, they just keep coming back up no matter how many times i kill it.

then ontop of that when i try to kill certain ones it like restarts my ubuntu and i need to wait for the desktop to load again then wait for it to open back up only to find everything is still there in the proceses tab....

Burned the Ubuntu ISO a few minutes ago and now I'm installing away (31%). The only thing I did different is choose 'Guided' instead of 'Manual' partitioning for step 12. 'Manual' gave me a error about not finding something.

Couldn't really see the install window buttons, but I guessed they were |Cancel| |Back| and |Next|.

39%!

54%! Oh, and since you asked, I'm using a used Logitech NetPlay PS2 Keyboard I found at GameStop for $10. It's more or less a PS2 controller with a keyboard stuck in the middle. With a PS2-PS3 converter (to run the PS2 controller) the unit takes up two USB ports. The Mode button on it (thankfully) works as a PS button, but so far the vibration mode doesn't work. Hopefully when everything is up and running I can use the PS2 analog joysticks as a mouse.

64%!

70%! Wish I could have installed this from a flash drive...

81%! Less than a minute remaining!

93%! A long frickin' minute here...

94%! Zzzzzzzzzzzzz....

Installation Complete! Now to goof around a little. Thanks Extreme_Dude!

UPDATE: Removed 7.04 from my PS3. I'm willing to take my lumps learning Linux, but I need stuff to work for me out of the box, like the Wi-Fi. I'm downloading YDL 5.01 and I'll try that, maybe even Ubuntu 7.10 if I hear good things about it.

guys, im having trouble with this. Yes i cancelled all process I even went to edit and selected ALL processes as opposed to MY. Also, i went to system services and got rid of every except for powernowd, gdm and ibus or whatever. What the frig is going on? I cant even get to the partitioning aspect...it just freezes before i can select anything. My disc is in great condition, is a CD-R, and im not a noob. I have a hacked Wii, Xbox, PSP, and gamecube, i'm not a moron. Advice? Please i want to run some oldschool nes and gameboy games so i dont have to keep hooking up my nes all the time!!! (its a pain now) ps-ihaveover 190 games for it :-)

Is it advised to install Linux, so that no data is lost in the format?

Linux is totally optional. Sony WAS going to have Linux pre-installed, but some goofy ******* said "NO".

And formats...well it deletes everything.

Yes. It means you wont have any files you'll have to back up.

So lemme get this straight, Ubuntu doesnt support Wireless AND you need to type boot-game-os every time to go to the XMB?

So every time i turn on my PS3, it goes to Ubuntu?

Count me out to Linux make a PS3 friendly version.

No. Once you type "boot-game-os" and get to the XMB, the PS3 stays on the XMB until you change the system settings to boot "other OS" in the XMB.

I'm having the same problem that tsibosp was having although on an SDTV. I started up terminal and typed just what you said but there was nothing there. It said /etc/kboot.conf at the top but it was empty. This is the 3rd version of Linux that I've tried to get working on my PS3 but I can never get them to work even after following the instructions step by step. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks.

Linux runs alongside the PS3's XMB. To switch from Linux to XMB, just type boot-game-os at the kboot. It works on all PS3s because Sony allowed it to...

Linux is one of the PS3's major features. It can be installed on ANY PS3, on ANY Firmware. You are not hacking the PS3 by installing Linux...

Also, yes, the SNES Emulator (SNES9x) works on PS3.
