Ok, I'm having an issue with this. I'm on the latest Sony firmware (2.10), and I did the formatting and installation of the bootloader, but when I insert the disc and try to run it, I get the error "No default root filesystem was found". I tried pressing enter at the kboot prompt, but I just get the kboot prompt again...help please.

Do you have to burn the ISO to a CD? Or can you use a DVD?

Great guide, but just to warn people, if you're not doing this on a HDTV you will only get a 576x460 resolution which sucks.

'Step 3: Download the KBoot here: http://download.softpedia.ro/dl/066a...es/otheros.bld'

i get three links to downloads

Sources mirror 1 (tar.gz) (0.042 MB)
otheros.bld for PlayStation 3 (2.8 MB)
otheros.bld for HELIOS PS3 Linux (3.1 MB)

which should i download? when i download the first, its the kboot11 folder. the second is otheros.bld, so is the third one though. but they are different sizes

which do i need to download?

Leave your disc in the drive and restart your PS3. Select Other OS from System Settings again. I had the same problem. It should work now.

No. The PS3 needs the PPC version.

I installed ubuntu yesterday only to find out after that wi-if does not work and the help forums to upgrade the kernel to get it work work is sketchy at best.

so i'm installing YDL right now as they have an automated script for fixing the wi-fi

from past pc experience with ubuntu it either just works or if it does not the user suport is slow and too technical for a noob and in that case your better off just waitting and hoping they fix it in the next distro.

Yes, during the format you can choose to allot 10GB to the PS3 so you can get 50GB for Linux.

It should be setup so that you can choose the sizes yourself.

Great guide I'm now running ubuntu 7.10 on my ps3. But I'm having some problems. (BTW I've never used linux before so its all a bit confusing and scary)

A weird thing in installation was that I didn't turn off any processes cos i couldn't see any options anywhere but it seemed to install fine.

1. When I start ubuntu from the kboot it has an error. Which goes something like this:
mkdir: cannot create /spu file system read only

Which I'm guessing isn't good =/ and might be causing my other problems

2. I'm on a HDTV using HDMI but I'm getting the SDTV resolution and its the only option under resolution settings.

3. It doesn't connect to network or even find it, I have it plugged in via lan but it won't connect to internet.

My grand plan is to also install wine and Photoshop CS2 and use my ps3 as a photoshop machine, but 1 step at a time

Any help would be very much appreciated

Don't even bother with Wine and Photoshop. GiMP is unbearibly laggy so I can't even imagine emulating Photoshop in Wine. The thought alone gives me the shivers...

WINE dosen't even work in PS3 Linux, since WINE is x86, and PS3 is PPC-based.

Fair enough =/ got internet and resolution working (Y) Just spu thing now, which is because my file system is read only and it wont let me change it =/ so i cant save anything
=(

Here's the error:

mkdir: cannot create directory '/spu' : read only file system

Mount point '/spu' does not exist. Skipping mount.

Great tutorial, everything was good till i realized that the bottom of the screen was missing. i couldnt finish the install as i accidentally minimized the window trying to maximize the window. lol i just went back into the xmb and formatted the hdd and ill give it another go tomorrow, btw i have heard and read of ppl using 3 different linux distros, ydl, ubuntu, and fedora, I run Ubuntu on my laptop, thats why I chose Ubuntu, but are there major differences between them??

still not working. it says:

ubuntu ps3 kboot loader.

no default root fs was found, or one was found and it didn't contains a message= config file.

if no rootfs was found, you can enter the shell here with 'sh'. exiting will return you to this prompt. in the shell you can mount your rootfs a
s
/mt/root/.

reasons this may have happened include:

- no drive with a rootfs was actually found.
- your rootfs does not have the correct volume label of "/"
- your rootfs is corrupt (use the rescue cd to fix this).

kboot: _

can someone please help?
