Default [Guide] How to install Ubuntu Linux on a PS3

Yeah! Prepare to read an incredibly crappy guide!!!

What you'll need:

A 20, 60, 40, or 80GB PS3

A CD-R Disc

A USB Mass Storage Device (i.e. Memory Stick, flash drive, etc.)

A Bluetooth or USB Keyboard and Mouse
(Duh.)

This Guide. (lol)

HOW TO INSTALL...

This is a n00b friendly guide. If it's to hard for you to understand, you have to go back to school...

Step 1: Download the Ubuntu Linux PPC image here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/rele...owerpc+ps3.iso

Step 2: Burn the ISO to a CD-R.

Step 3: Download the KBoot here: http://download.softpedia.ro/dl/066a...es/otheros.bld

Step 4: On your flash drive or whatever, create a folder called, "PS3" on the ROOT, then within that folder, create a "OTHEROS" folder, and put the otheros.bld in the OTHEROS folder.

Step 4.1: On the PS3, do a Quick format, and allot 10GB for otheros.

Step 4.2: Connect the storage device to your PS3.

Step 5: On your PS3, go to Settings>System Settings>Install OtherOS. Press X to detect the otheros.bld, and Press X to install it.

Step 6: Then, do Settings>System Settings>Default System>OtherOS. The PS3 will ask you to start OtherOS. Select Yes. The PS3 will restart. You'll hten see the KBoot screen. (It should say "Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader").

Step 7: Insert the Ubuntu CD you burned.

Step 8: On the keyboard, hit ENTER. (You should've had your keyboard 'n mouse connected already)

Step 9: Booting from CD is painfully slow, like watching snails race across the room, lol.

Step 10: When you get on the Linux desktop, Stop ALL process, except ones that are needed, because there is a bug which halts the installation at 15%. To avoid this you need to terminate some running services and processes.
open System > Administration > Services.
Uncheck everything except the CPU frequency manager (powernowd), Graphical login manager (gdm) and System communication bus (dbus).

Step 11: Open System > Administration > System Monitor. Select the Processes tab.
Kill all processes on the list (right click > Kill Process). The ones that are necessary for the system to install will automatically restart or refuse to be terminated.

Step 12: Now, install Ubuntu. Click the install icon. You'll need to create an Ubuntu account, then login to it. It'll then ask you where to install Ubuntu, select Manual, then select the 10.7GB hard drive.

Step 13: When install completes, restart the PS3, then you'll see the KBoot. You can now remove the Ubuntu CD. Input yur login info, and hit ENTER.

Step 14: Enjoy Ubuntu!

Remember, to get back to the PS3 XMB, type boot-game-os at KBoot. To uninstall it, just do a full format.

HOPE YOU LIKED MY GUIDE! PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS!

ADDITIONAL NOTES: If the PS3 does not ask you to restart after selecting "OTHEROS", RESTART MANUALLY

CHANGES:

REVAMPED STEPS 10 and 11 (Thanks megaglow_z!!!)

ADDED 40GB PLAYSTATION 3

UPDATE:

This guide seems to be working with Ubuntu 7.10.

NOTE: I ADDED THE LINK TO 7.10

Nice work, I'm completely new to the PS3 scene and as a user of Ubuntu on my laptop I'm thrilled I can use it on my PS3.

Thanks

You have a PS3?

Nice guide, very easy to follow. I just want to know something, is there any risk in installing this on a PS3? can you 'brick' your console?

Installing OtherOS is fail proof. If something does go wrong, you can get the ps3 to boot up with default settings. Just hold the power button for 5 seconds when putting it on. I learned from experience.

To make this truly noob friendly, the only change is to explain...
Step 10: When you get on the Linux desktop, install it, but FIRST, open System, select Administration>Services. Uncheck everything except the CPU frequency manager, Graphical Login manager and System communication bus. Then, System > Administration > System Monitor. Select "Proccesses". (My spelling is bad).
Step 11: Stop ALL process, except ones that are needed.

with this....
Step 10:When you get on the Linux desktop,Stop ALL process, except ones that are needed because there is a bug which halts the installation at 15%. To avoid this you need to terminate some running services and processes.

Wow, that's pretty good. So, if I was to buy a PS3 and install Linux on it, would my warranty be broken?

What do you mean it can't be voided if it has Linux? So without Linux my warranty can be voided?

In short, the only way you can void yur warranty is by opening up the PS3.

Thanks for the guide, I just need the PS3 now :P (see sig )

Do all programs that are open source (ie Amarak, FF, WINE) run on the PS3 as it can be compiled to PPC architecture or is there a limit to what programs you can use?

Thanks

The only way you can void the warranty is to open the PS3. Also, even if you turn off a PS3 during an update, it cant brick.
This is that some guy made to show it:http://youtube.com/watch?v=G59Z0hvrN6I

Does Ubuntu on the PS3 support wireless? Cuz' I won't be having a wired connection when I get to my dad's house this weekend, which is when I'll be doing the installation. So, uhh, yeah. Wireless? Yay o' nay?

How do I increase the resolution? I went to system>prefrences>screen resolution and it only has one resolution. I'm using an HDTV and an HDMI cable, plus other distros I used went to the maximum resolution automaticly. How do I do the same for ubuntu? My TV even states (don't know how it knows but it does) that it's displaying 480i. How do bump that up?

does it run at HD format like YDL does? If so then how do you use the standard format?

It should automatically install at 480i. but after the installation, I can't increase the resolution. I'm missing something here, and when somebody points it out, I am probably going to kick myself... repeatedly. Or is ubuntu only designed to run at this low resolution?

For Sony PlayStation 3 systems. (Note that this image has some installer bugs; a custom image is available containing fixes for the main issues.)

EDIT: why has no one sticked this?
