snes emulator help PLEASE

whenever i launch a game i get an error that looks like this

snes9x returned error code 1

The file im using is a zip file. am i supposed to unzip it? if so how do i do that because i dont see an option for that.

I would help you, but I can't get SNES9x to install on Yellow Dog. *Cries*

Try setting all the options to the minimum specification needed.
