Default YDL+portage=?

The title says it all. I've tried to install Gentoo, 5+ times, and messed up every time (can't get KDE to work). I'm a noob to linux, but I'm still trying to learn.
I want to install portage on YDL to I can use emerge because I couldn't install diddily otherwise (got portage to run in fluxbox, but it still wouldn't use KDE to work on my next reboot.) The only other distro I've gotten to work without video problems (ubuntu) is YDL. So when/if I install YDL, will I also be able to install portage?

Don't think thats possible. What do you mean you couldn't get KDE to work? All I had to do is type in emerge gnome, then set the xsession to gnome(rather than fluxbox) and everything worked fine. After installing KDE did you change the xsession from fluxbox to KDE?

I reinstalled gentoo so I have a clean slate. I then used "emerge -vG kdebase." When it was done, I changed the rc.conf and used KDE as prescribed by sinfulfate. But the outcome is always the same. after entering root and my pw at login, it makes me choose "Load Session" or "default/failsafe". If I choose "Load session", I get only that one thing that has the buttons CLient list, Session log, Checkpoint and Shutdown. If I choose Default/Failsafe, I wind up at fluxbox again. For the XSESSION variable, I've tried "KDE", "kde", and "kde-3.5"(which is what shows up in when I use "ls /etc/X11/Sessions"). What am I doing wrong? Perhaps I should try gnome?

As a non-related question, how do you pronounce gentoo, ubuntu, and fedora? This is slowly driving me insane?

I just use "emerge gnome" and it said 244 packages (I think that's what they're called). I thought it was 255. Should I worry?
