Hey guys,
I've gotten through the initial steps of setting up Gentoo thanks to the how to wiki guide (at least I think it's correct). But now I'm running into a problem logging into linux. Now that everything was finished from the install guide and I've rebooted the system, it brings me to a screen saying "welcome to localhost" with a login and password field. Obviously I know my password that I set when installing, but is there a default user name that I'm not guessing? I've tried administrator, leaving it blank, admin, and everything else I could think of with my password that I set during installation. Could someone give me a little advice? Oh, and note that it's entirely possible that I did mess something up during install, but I thought I got it right... Thanks! |

Got it, thanks!
So from here I'm somewhat going by the rest of the install suggestions. But could anyone give me some tips on how to make linux a little more user friendly? Right now I'm attempting to install mplayer. Also, I think I might have messed something up when I edited /etc/make.conf I noticed that my copy didn't have the line: PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage" So I added it along with the line the guide said to add. Now that I look back it said not to touch anything above the last line that was requested that I add. Should I NOT have added the missing line between my copy and the one in the guide? PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage" - didn't originally exist, so I added it (but wasn't specified in the guide to be added) PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://ftp-chi.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All/" - Was specified to be added, so I did. |

Sinfulfate, thank you. When this install is finished, I'll try gnome.
Also, do you know if I hurt anything with my addition to make.conf with this line? PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage" -= Double Post =- Oh boy, i just emerged gnome. I'm going to be here all night, aren't I? Well, I'm on 3 of 255... Compile compile compile! Last edited by SOEX; 08-15-2007 at 07:51 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Cool, thanks Sinful.
Any other bits of advice that you would care to share with a newbie? I'm reading up on everything now, but there's a LOT to digest. Anything that might make the journey a little easier and quicker would be appreciated. Last edited by SOEX; 08-15-2007 at 11:31 PM.. |
